History

Kumho was founded in 1960 in Gwangju, South Korea, under the name Samyang Tire. The company grew out of the transportation operations of entrepreneur Park In-chon, who produced about twenty tires a day to make up for the shortage of quality tires for his bus company. The 1970s were a period of rapid growth: the Songjeong plant came online in 1971, the Gwangju plant was completed in 1974, and the company went on to develop radial tires and aircraft tires in 1975. That same year, the brand began exporting to the United States. In 1990, Kumho opened a technical center in Akron, Ohio, and started research on racing tires; by 1992, it already ranked among the world's ten largest manufacturers. In 1996, the company dropped the Samyang name and adopted the name Kumho Tire. Starting in the 1990s, its international expansion took shape through the establishment of plants abroad: China, Vietnam and the United States. Today Kumho belongs to the Kumho Asiana group, a Korean conglomerate with diversified operations. The manufacturer operates three major plants in Korea (Pyeongtaek, Gokseong and Gwangju, the latter site housing its main research center), three plants in China (Tianjin, Nanjing-Gaoxin and Changchun), one plant in Vietnam in Binh Duong province, and a plant in Macon, Georgia, that serves the North American market. In Canada, Kumho operates through its subsidiary Kumho Tire Canada, located in Mississauga, Ontario, which coordinates the distribution of its touring, performance, light-truck and commercial lines, supported by regional distributors from coast to coast. The brand thus supplies the Quebec market with all-season, summer and winter tires.

Technologies

Kumho develops several technologies for its tires. The K-ART system, an in-house noise-reduction technology, places sound-absorbing materials inside the casing to dampen rolling resonance and improve acoustic comfort; the K-Silent system extends this approach. All-season and summer tires use silica-based rubber compounds that optimize wet grip and rolling resistance, which helps with fuel economy. The tread patterns are designed with optimized pitch sequences and wide circumferential grooves to channel water away, reduce the risk of hydroplaning and distribute wear evenly. Dedicated winter tires rely on specific rubber compounds that stay flexible in the cold and on zigzag designs that multiply the biting edges on snow and ice. The brand is also working on future concepts such as the e-NIMF airless tire and e-TOPs hybrid structures.

Innovations

Kumho built its technical credibility through research and competition. As early as 1975, the brand was developing its first radial tires and aircraft tires, then launched work on racing tires in 1990. It forged a motorsport track record by supplying touring-car series and equipping Formula 3, a single-seater category that serves as a springboard for drivers in Europe. These commitments fueled the development of its high-performance ECSTA lines. On the sustainability and efficiency side, the brand designed eco-friendly families such as ECOWING, focused on low rolling resistance and fuel economy. Its research draws on several centers: the main one in Gwangju, Korea, complemented by facilities in the United States (Akron, Ohio), Germany and China. The Akron center specifically leads the development of products intended for the North American market. Kumho is also exploring emerging technologies, including airless tires and solutions geared toward electric mobility.

Manufacturing

Kumho's head office and main research center are located in Gwangju, South Korea, where the brand also operates plants in Pyeongtaek and Gokseong. Internationally, the manufacturer has three plants in China (Tianjin, Nanjing-Gaoxin and Changchun), one plant in Vietnam in Binh Duong province, and a North American plant in Macon, Georgia, that supplies the Canadian market among others. In Canada, Kumho has no plant: its presence rests on the subsidiary Kumho Tire Canada, located in Mississauga, Ontario, and on a network of regional distributors serving the entire country, including Quebec.

Reputation

Kumho enjoys a reputation as a brand offering good value for the money, positioned in the mid-range segment between budget tires and premium brands. Independent tests and consumer reviews generally praise the quiet ride, wet-road behavior and longevity of several of its all-season lines. In Quebec, where winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15, Kumho's relevance rests mainly on its WinterCraft family, 3PMSF-certified, and on its all-season tires for cars and SUVs. The brand is widely available at Canadian retailers, making it an accessible option for motorists looking for a balance between price and performance.
