History

JK Tyre & Industries Ltd has its roots in the JK Organisation, an Indian industrial conglomerate founded by the Singhania family. The company was incorporated in 1951; under the chairmanship of Hari Shankar Singhania, it obtained a license to manufacture automotive tires and tubes in 1972 and became a publicly traded company. Its first plant in Kankroli (Rajasthan) came on line in the 1970s. In 1977, JK Tyre introduced the radial tire in India, earning it the nickname "Radial Leader" in its home market. Over the decades, the group expanded its capacity through acquisitions: it took over Vikrant Tyres and then, in 2008, purchased the Mexican manufacturer Compania Hulera Tornel, which operates three plants (Azcapotzalco, Tultitlan and Hidalgo, in the Mexico City area) producing passenger and light truck tires in both bias and radial construction. This acquisition gave the group a North American industrial base and a gateway to the markets of the Americas. Later, JK Tyre absorbed Cavendish Industries (formerly Birla Tyres / Kesoram), strengthening its presence in the light truck and two-wheeler segments. The company today claims around 35 million tires per year, produced in roughly a dozen plants (most in India, three in Mexico through Tornel). In North America, JK Tyre opened a U.S. sales company in 2020, based in Houston (Western Tires), to distribute its passenger, light truck and heavy truck lines, supplied from India and the Mexican plant. In Canada, the brand is carried by distributors and online retailers, with no plant or industrial subsidiary in the country. JK Tyre is also well known for its involvement in Indian motorsport, where it has sponsored and organized racing and karting championships for several decades, which feeds its development programs and its technically minded brand image.

Technologies

JK Tyre builds its lineup around radial technology, which it introduced in India, along with bias (diagonal) lines still found in certain commercial and agricultural segments. Its passenger tires rely on asymmetric tread patterns, dual-radius profiles and multi-pitch sequences to cut noise, plus wide circumferential grooves to channel water and resist hydroplaning. Its most publicized innovation is the "Smart Tyre," a connected monitoring system based on TREEL sensors (TPMS) that measure pressure and temperature in real time and transmit them via Bluetooth to a mobile app. The group also develops compounds aimed at fuel efficiency and longevity, as well as reinforced carcasses for its SUV and off-road tires.

Innovations

The introduction of the radial tire in India in 1977 remains JK Tyre's major historical contribution. More recently, the company launched the "Smart Tyre" equipped with TREEL sensors, billed as a first of its kind in its sector in India: internet-based tracking of pressure and temperature that supports preventive maintenance and extends tire life. JK Tyre invests in research to develop low rolling resistance compounds and reduced-pressure ("puncture guard") tires. Its long-standing involvement in motorsport and karting in India serves as a testing ground to validate grip, braking and handling performance, notably on its Ranger (SUV) and Blaze (two-wheeler) lines, tested on the track. The group also highlights sustainability goals across its plants.

Manufacturing

JK Tyre & Industries is headquartered in India, and most of its output comes from Indian plants (notably in Rajasthan, Karnataka and elsewhere), supplemented by the Cavendish Industries sites. Since 2008, the group has owned the manufacturer Tornel in Mexico and its three plants in the Mexico City area (Azcapotzalco, Tultitlan, Hidalgo), producing passenger and light truck tires for the markets of the Americas. In Canada, JK Tyre has no plant or industrial subsidiary: its tires are imported and distributed there by wholesalers and online retailers. Its North American presence is supported by a U.S. sales company established in Houston.

Reputation

JK Tyre is seen as a good value-for-money brand, a leader in its home Indian market and recognized for its pioneering role in radial technology. In North America, it remains a second-tier brand, present mainly in the light truck, heavy truck and entry- to mid-range passenger segments, sold online and through select distributors. In Quebec, JK Tyre's passenger/SUV offering is marginal and its lines are generally not 3PMSF-certified for winter use; a buyer should check the marking of a specific model case by case before considering use that complies with the winter tire requirement from December 1 to March 15.
