Techno Pneu (Centre Techno-Pneu inc.) is a Quebec company based in Rimouski, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Born out of Vulcanisation Marquis, founded in 1957 by Wilfrid Marquis, it operates the only retreaded-tire plant in Quebec and one of the few in Canada. History
The Techno Pneu story begins in 1948, when Wilfrid Marquis opened a gas station in Rimouski. In 1957, he founded Vulcanisation Marquis, a tire-repair shop that forms the root of today's Centre Techno-Pneu inc. Over the decades, the business has remained a family affair: it is now led by Marcel Marquis, the founder's son, supported by Éric Marquis and Jean-François Marquis, who represent the third generation. In the early days of remolding, the shop worked on bias-ply casings (1960s–1970s), then adapted its processes to the arrival of the radial tire. The turning point came in 1997, with the construction in Rimouski of a modern remolding plant that gives a second life to hundreds of thousands of carefully sorted casings each year. That is when the company developed its in-house "Écolo Techno" brand, an eco-friendly remolded tire sold for considerably less than a new North American tire. At the same time, Techno Pneu built out a network of branches across eastern Quebec — Rimouski (two service points), Rivière-du-Loup, Amqui, and Chandler — along with a recapping shop dedicated to heavy trucks. In 2022, the company opened a new distribution warehouse of more than 90,000 sq. ft. in Rimouski's industrial park, billed as the largest tire distribution center east of Quebec City, the result of an investment of roughly $4.2 million. This center brings together all product lines, both new and remolded, for passenger cars, pickups, heavy trucks, agricultural machinery, and the mining sector. The company's reputation extends beyond its borders: its remolded tires have notably equipped New York's famous yellow taxis. With about a hundred employees, Techno Pneu stands out as a recognized player in tire remolding and recycling in North America.
Technologies
The technological heart of Techno Pneu is remolding, a more comprehensive process than simple retreading: instead of replacing only the tread, the plant rebuilds the rubber envelope all the way down to the sidewalls on an inspected and sorted casing. The process runs through several major stages: automated buffing of the rubber down to the casing, brushing of the beads, cementing, application of a new layer of rubber, vulcanization in heated molds under high pressure, then deflashing and final inspection. The company uses a recycling technology of European origin, comparable to that used to manufacture first-generation tires and once applied to the retreading of aircraft tires. Quality control relies on shearography, an optical technique for detecting internal defects, ensuring the reliability of the casings being returned to service.

Techno Pneu's distinctive contribution lies in its low-footprint remolding process: according to the company, manufacturing a remolded tire requires about 13 liters of crude oil versus 35 liters for a new tire, which would represent an annual saving of roughly one million liters of petroleum products. Remolding recycles the entire original casing, with no water consumption and no significant atmospheric emissions. The company has continually evolved its expertise to keep pace with market changes, moving from bias-ply casings to radial, then refocusing its production on SUV and pickup tires as those vehicles grew in popularity. It systematically sets aside unsuitable casings — low-end Chinese tires, already-remolded tires, damaged or nail-punctured envelopes — in order to preserve safety.
