Brand profile

Toyo Tires is a Japanese manufacturer founded in 1945 in Osaka, today part of Toyo Tire Corporation, headquartered in Itami (Hyogo Prefecture). The world's eleventh-largest producer, it operates plants across Asia, North America and Europe. The brand is best known for its Open Country lines (SUVs, pickups, off-road) and Proxes lines (performance), backed by a strong engineering culture and materials research.

Positioning: SUV and off-road tires (Open Country) and performance tires (Proxes), with winter and all-season lines.

History

Toyo Tires was born on August 1, 1945, in Osaka, Japan, under the name Toyo Rubber Industry (Toyo Gomu Kogyo), to meet the urgent demand for tires and industrial rubber products in post-war Japan. Production began with bias-ply tires for trucks and buses, before expanding to passenger cars as civilian transport recovered. Over the decades, the company invested heavily in research and developed recognized expertise in rubber chemistry and computer-aided design. In 2000, it unveiled its in-house T-mode technology, which combines driving simulations and tire simulations to accelerate development. The brand gradually expanded internationally and built an industrial network spread across several continents. In North America, Toyo established its first tire manufacturing plant in White, in Bartow County, Georgia (United States), where production began in the mid-2000s; this site uses a highly automated, proprietary production system called ATOM (Advanced Tire Operation Module). In 2016, the White facility became the Toyo group's largest manufacturing operation, with an annual capacity of about 11.5 million tires, and has been the subject of successive expansions and continuous investment over the years, creating hundreds of jobs in Bartow County. In 2019, the company officially changed its corporate name from Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. to Toyo Tire Corporation, and that same year modernized its design platform by integrating artificial intelligence into its engineering foundation, giving rise to T-MODE. The group today markets several tire brands, including Toyo and its subsidiary Nitto, which is more oriented toward performance and customization. With revenue on the order of 497 billion yen in 2022, Toyo ranks among the world's leading manufacturers, with a reputation for serious engineering and a well-established industrial presence in North America.

Technologies

Toyo organizes its research around two pillars. Nano Balance Technology is a materials-design approach at the nanometer scale (one billionth of a meter): through observation, prediction, design and production control at the molecular level, it aims to develop ideal rubber compounds that reconcile two usually contradictory requirements, namely low rolling resistance (fuel economy) and strong wet grip (braking). The second pillar is T-MODE, an intelligent tire-development platform. Derived from the T-mode technology unveiled in 2000, which combined driving and tire simulations, it was redesigned in 2019 to incorporate artificial intelligence. Through machine learning, T-MODE predicts a tire's characteristics in real time based on the targeted performance, which significantly shortens design cycles compared with the classic method of successive trial and error.

Innovations

Toyo's engineering stands out for translating its advanced simulations to real-world conditions, including winter conditions. Building on its T-MODE, the brand has developed a capability for real-time simulation and prediction of snow behavior, a direct asset for developing tires suited to northern climates. Its subsidiary Nitto also serves as a laboratory for innovation and style, particularly in the world of drifting and customization. Toyo is also a major presence in North American off-road competition, where it equips Trophy Truck-type vehicles and competes in demanding desert races; these events serve as a testbed to validate the durability of the casings, the resilience of the compounds and the traction of the tread patterns in the Open Country line. The brand is also involved in disciplines such as drifting and certain motorsport categories, where it tests the grip and handling of its Proxes tires. This constant back-and-forth between digital simulation, competition and series production feeds the continuous improvement of its consumer products.

Manufacturing

Toyo's historical core and R&D are located in Japan, where the brand was born in 1945 and where its group is headquartered in Itami. The industrial network is global, with plants spread across Asia, North America and Europe. For the North American market, the key site is the plant in White, in Bartow County, Georgia (United States), Toyo's first tire plant on the continent. Equipped with the proprietary ATOM automated system and with a capacity of about 11.5 million tires per year, it has undergone several expansions. This local production strengthens the availability of common models for Canada and Quebec and stabilizes supply lead times.

Reputation

Toyo enjoys a solid reputation, particularly among SUV and pickup owners, thanks to its Open Country line, known for being durable and off-road capable. Positioned in the mid-premium segment, the brand is seen as a good compromise between the performance of the big names and a more affordable price. Proxes tires are popular with performance-driving enthusiasts, while the brand's presence in off-road competition and drifting reinforces its image of toughness and handling. In Quebec, where the law requires compliant winter tires during the regulated period, Toyo meets the requirement with its dedicated Observe winter tires and its winter-rated all-season models (Celsius) bearing the 3PMSF pictogram (mountain and snowflake).
