History

Achilles traces its origins to PT Multistrada Arah Sarana (MASA), a company founded on May 28, 1988, in East Cikarang, in the Bekasi region of Indonesia. At its founding, the company was named PT Oroban Perkasa and produced motorcycle and automobile tires under its own brands. It adopted the name Multistrada Arah Sarana in 1996 and listed its shares on the Jakarta Stock Exchange. The consumer brand Achilles was launched in 2005, initially in the replacement market. To raise the quality of its production, MASA drew on technical assistance from established European manufacturers, notably Italy's Pirelli and Germany's Continental, which transferred processes and engineering expertise. This rise in capability allowed Achilles to gain market share in Indonesia and become an original-equipment supplier for automakers operating in the country. MASA also runs a second passenger brand, Corsa, along with a line of motorcycle tires. Internationally, Achilles expanded its distribution to dozens of countries across several continents during the 2010s, making it one of the most exported Indonesian brands. The major turning point came on January 22, 2019, when the French Michelin group announced the acquisition of MASA; upon completion of the deal, Michelin held more than 99% of the capital. This integration tied the Indonesian plant to the world's largest tire manufacturer and gave Achilles access to the group's quality standards and engineering capabilities. Today, production remains concentrated at the Indonesian industrial complex, which also manufactures tires for Michelin group brands. In North America, Achilles remains an imported replacement option, sold through distributors and retailers rather than as original equipment.

Technologies

Achilles tires are built on conventional radial architectures with a reinforced casing and steel belts, suited to everyday road use. The passenger and performance models use directional or asymmetric tread patterns, with wide circumferential grooves designed to channel water away and limit hydroplaning, along with sturdy shoulders to stabilize the tire through corners. On the commercial lines, the brand adds cap plies and oversized sidewalls to reduce heat and fatigue while increasing load capacity. The off-road models incorporate staggered center blocks, high-density serrated sipes, and self-cleaning stone ejectors on the shoulders. The rubber compounds and processes benefit from technical transfers from Pirelli and Continental, and since 2019 from membership in the Michelin group.

Innovations

Achilles's contribution lies mainly in the cost-controlled industrialization of proven technologies rather than in patented breakthroughs. The technical partnerships with Pirelli and Continental, followed by integration into Michelin, enabled MASA to modernize its lines, improve uniformity and quality control, and gradually broaden its range of sizes and speed ratings. The brand has invested in low-rolling-resistance compounds to reduce fuel consumption, in directional patterns optimized for water evacuation, and in reinforced structures for vans in heavy-duty service. On the sport side, the ATR Sport line targets enthusiasts of dynamic driving with tread designs that promote steering precision and high-speed stability. In terms of sustainability, membership in the Michelin group is progressively aligning Achilles with goals for tread longevity, energy efficiency, and a reduced industrial footprint.

Manufacturing

Achilles's industrial heart is in East Cikarang, in the Bekasi region of Indonesia, at the PT Multistrada Arah Sarana complex, which spans several dozen hectares and employs thousands of people. MASA's administrative headquarters are in Jakarta. This plant manufactures Achilles tires as well as the Corsa brand and, since the 2019 acquisition, tires for the Michelin group. Achilles has no plant in Canada or Quebec. In the Quebec and Canadian market, the tires are imported and then distributed by independent wholesalers and retailers; availability varies by size and by the seasons offered through these networks.

Reputation

Achilles is seen as a budget brand offering an appealing price-to-value ratio, especially on dry pavement, where several tests note good grip and stable handling. Opinions are more mixed on wet surfaces, where some models show their limits, and on noise comfort. In Quebec, interest centers on the road models and on the Winter 101 winter tire; it is important to check for the 3PMSF (mountain-and-snowflake) pictogram required from December 1 to March 15, as the M+S marking alone is insufficient. The commercial and off-road lines are aimed more at fleets and outdoor enthusiasts. Availability depends on local importers.
