Tire brand
Carlisle
Carlisle is an American specialty tire brand owned by the Carlstar group.
Brand profile
Carlisle is an American specialty tire brand owned by the Carlstar group. Founded in 1917 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, it focuses on off-road and utility tires rather than passenger-car tires: ATVs and side-by-sides, trailers, lawn and garden equipment, as well as small- and medium-size industrial and agricultural tires. The brand remains a benchmark for original equipment and replacement tires in North America.
Positioning: Specialty off-road and utility tires: ATVs, trailers, lawn and garden, industrial.
History
The Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company was founded in 1917 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, by Charles S. Moomy. Having previously worked at Keystone Rubber in Erie, he raised enough capital to buy the machinery needed to manufacture bicycle inner tubes and secured a supply agreement with Montgomery Ward. By 1928, the company was credited with the first extruded and fully molded inner tube produced commercially in the United States. Production climbed to more than 10,000 inner tubes per day, and the workforce reached a peak of 388 employees. In 1943, Carlisle was acquired by the Pharis Tire and Rubber Company. Pharis's board liquidated the company in 1949 and distributed Carlisle's shares to Pharis shareholders, marking the starting point of a long evolution under the banner of Carlisle Companies, a diversified conglomerate. Over the decades, the transportation products division built out a line of off-road tires and wheels for specific utility applications: all-terrain vehicles, road trailers, lawn tractors, and light industrial and agricultural equipment. On December 31, 2013, American Industrial Partners (AIP) acquired the Transportation Products division of Carlisle Companies to form an independent entity, The Carlstar Group. There, the Carlisle brand sits alongside other product families such as ITP tires and wheels, Marathon tires, and Cragar, Black Rock, and Unique automotive wheels. Carlstar maintains a North American industrial footprint, with manufacturing and distribution facilities in the United States that serve both original equipment manufacturers and the replacement market. In Canada, including Quebec, Carlisle operates no known plant: the tires are offered through retailers, hardware stores, trailer centers, and recreational vehicle dealers, where they rank among the common choices for replacing trailer, ATV, and lawn tractor tires.
Technologies
Carlisle's technologies are geared toward specific utility applications rather than high-speed road performance. On trailer tires, the brand combines bias-ply or radial carcass construction depending on the model, multiple plies to increase load capacity, and a tread designed to reduce heat buildup, the main cause of premature wear during extended towing. Ozone and anti-aging protections preserve the sidewalls exposed to sun and weather. On premium radial trailer tires, a high-tenacity belt package improves resistance to impacts and road debris. On the ATV and side-by-side side, Carlisle relies on puncture-resistant rubber compounds and versatile lug tread patterns for soft, intermediate, and muddy surfaces. Lawn tires adopt a flat profile with a wide contact patch that is gentle on turf.
Innovations
Carlisle lays claim to a historical milestone: the first extruded and fully molded inner tube manufactured commercially in the United States, around 1928, at a time when this process represented a significant production advance. The brand's current innovation focuses on durability and adaptation to real-world uses rather than competition. On trailer tires, the work centers on heat management, extending tread life through interconnected tread blocks that promote even wear, and increased resistance to debris thanks to reinforced belts. In the industrial segment, Carlisle has expanded its Ultra Guard line with heavy-duty and mixed-surface versions featuring thicker sidewalls and longer-lasting treads. On the lawn and garden side, the emphasis is on tread patterns that provide grip without damaging turf, as well as all-season designs that deliver reliable traction in dry, wet, or light winter conditions.
Manufacturing
The headquarters of Carlisle-brand operations now falls under The Carlstar Group, which emerged from the Transportation Products division of Carlisle Companies sold to American Industrial Partners in 2013. The brand takes its name from the town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the company's birthplace since 1917. Carlstar maintains a manufacturing and distribution base in North America, primarily in the United States, to serve the original equipment and replacement markets. In Canada and Quebec, no Carlisle plant is known: the brand's presence rests on a distribution and retail network. Carlisle trailer, ATV, and lawn tires are thus found at trailer dealers, RV centers, hardware stores, and specialty tire retailers across the province.
Reputation
Carlisle enjoys a reputation as a practical, affordable brand, well established in the trailer, ATV, and lawn equipment segments rather than in passenger-car tires. Users appreciate its value for money and its broad availability as a common replacement tire. Reviews of trailer tires, notably the Radial Trail HD, highlight good heat resistance and reliable load capacity for towing, while some point out the importance of respecting the recommended pressure and load rating. In Quebec, Carlisle's relevance stems mainly from seasonal and utility applications: boat, RV, and utility trailers, all-terrain vehicles, lawn tractors, and snow blowers. These tires are not 3PMSF-certified road winter tires and are not intended to meet Quebec's December 1 to March 15 requirement.
