History

CEAT was born in 1924 in Turin, Italy, under the name Cavi Elettrici e Affini Torino (electrical cables and related products of Turin), a company founded by Virginio Bruni Tedeschi to manufacture cables for telecommunications and railways. The company later diversified into tires. On March 10, 1958, it was incorporated in India under the name CEAT Tyres of India, in Mumbai, initially in partnership with the Tata group. In 1982, the Indian RPG group (RPG Enterprises) acquired the company, which became a wholly Indian company. Under RPG's stewardship, CEAT gradually expanded its lineup and industrial footprint. Today, the company produces more than 48 million tires per year, covering cars, two-wheelers, trucks, buses, light commercial vehicles, earthmoving equipment, forklifts, tractors, trailers and three-wheelers. Its plants are located in India, notably in Halol, Butibori, Bhandup, Nashik, Ambernath and Chennai. The Ambernath plant, on the outskirts of Mumbai, is a modern site dedicated to radial agricultural and off-the-road (OTR) tires for global markets, including North America. The Halol plant earned the World Economic Forum's "Lighthouse" certification, a distinction reserved for facilities at the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing. In 2023, CEAT acquired the off-road tire and track business of the Camso brand from Michelin, strengthening its specialty segment. The brand marked its centennial in 2024. Internationally, CEAT exports to more than 120 countries and maintains regional offices notably in Brazil, Dubai, Germany, India, Indonesia, Nepal and the Philippines. In North America, CEAT distributes its products through a site dedicated to the U.S. market (ceattires.us) and has also entered the North American truck-bus radial tire segment.

Technologies

CEAT develops several technologies tailored to its different segments. On its long-life passenger tires, such as the Milaze X3 line, the company relies on a specific rubber compound, increased groove depth and a reinforced structure to extend service life. For its performance tires, CEAT was the first Indian manufacturer to introduce run-flat tires (RFT) as well as 21-inch ZR tires. Its CALM technology aims to reduce rolling noise and improve comfort. Its CrossDrive all-terrain SUV tires feature stone ejectors, zigzag traction grooves, adaptive 3D sipes and a reinforced shoulder design. On its premium SecuraDrive passenger tires, an asymmetric tread pattern and four wide circumferential grooves channel water away for grip on wet pavement.

Innovations

Innovation at CEAT revolves around several focus areas. In the high-performance segment, the company made its mark on the Indian industry by launching the first run-flat tires and the first large-diameter ZR tires manufactured locally, which positioned it as a tire supplier for luxury vehicles capable of exceeding 300 km/h. CEAT also invests in advanced manufacturing: its Halol plant received the World Economic Forum's "Lighthouse" certification, and its Ambernath plant uses virtual-reality training stations and automated equipment to produce agricultural, off-road and forestry radials destined for North America. In terms of sustainability, the company pursues recognized environmental certifications (ISO 14001) and workplace safety distinctions (British Safety Council). Its 2023 acquisition of the Camso brand's off-road business from Michelin enriched its technology portfolio in tires and tracks for equipment.

Manufacturing

CEAT's headquarters are in Mumbai, India. Its Indian plants are located in Halol, Butibori, Bhandup, Nashik, Ambernath and Chennai. The Ambernath plant, on a roughly 50-acre site on the outskirts of Mumbai, is dedicated to agricultural and off-road radials destined for global markets, including North America, and operates with automated equipment. The Halol plant holds the World Economic Forum's "Lighthouse" certification. CEAT does not own any plant in Canada or Quebec. Its North American presence rests on distribution: a site dedicated to the U.S. market (ceattires.us) and a recent entry into the North American truck-bus radial tire segment. In Quebec, availability of CEAT models comes through importing and resellers.

Reputation

CEAT enjoys strong name recognition in India, where it ranks among the leading manufacturers, and growing recognition internationally, particularly in the specialty agricultural and off-road segment, where it is cited as a major player in agricultural radials. Its passenger tires, such as the Milaze X3 and the SecuraDrive, are generally praised for their durability and value for money, and are tested in the Indian specialized press. In North America, the brand remains less widespread than the major established names. In Quebec, few CEAT passenger models carry the 3PMSF winter certification; you should therefore check the marking before buying in order to comply with the requirement in effect from December 1 to March 15.
