History

Gislaved was born in 1893 when brothers Carl and Wilhelm Gislow launched a rubber goods factory in the Swedish municipality of Gislaved. The first products were balloons and rubber overshoes (galoshes). In 1904, the factory turned to bicycle tires, then launched its first automobile tire in 1905. After a halt in car tire production between 1912 and 1926 due to durability problems, the business resumed with an improved cotton-carcass design. In 1927, Gislaved began supplying Volvo, a partnership that cemented its reputation as an established Swedish manufacturer. In 1938, a technical agreement was reached with the American US Rubber Company. The brand stopped producing truck tires around 1980 to focus on passenger cars and SUVs. In 1985-1986, Gislaved merged with Viking Tyres to form Nivis Tyre AB. Continental AG acquired 49% of the company in 1991, then the entirety in 1992, making Gislaved one of its brands. The historic Gislaved factory closed in 2002, with production transferred to other plants in the group. Today, Continental manufactures Gislaved-branded tires at its plants located in France, Slovakia, Romania and Portugal. The brand is used by Continental for products developed for the Swedish, Canadian, German, Spanish, Italian and Nordic markets. In North America, Gislaved is present in Canada, where its winter tires are distributed in particular by major retailers such as Canadian Tire and several online resellers, making it a well-known option in provinces with harsh winters such as Quebec.

Technologies

Gislaved winter tires rely on rubber compounds designed to stay flexible in extreme cold, an essential condition for maintaining grip on ice and snow. Recent models combine three-dimensional, stepped and sinusoidal sipes that multiply biting edges in snow while stabilizing the tread blocks. Angled-block shoulders improve road holding and steering precision. In the studdable Nordic range, the tires are pre-drilled to accept studs, with some models offered pre-installed with studs (Eco Tri-Star technology) to maximize traction on bare ice. Directional tread patterns and wide grooves promote slush evacuation and reduce the risk of winter hydroplaning. Benefiting from membership in the Continental group, Gislaved draws on shared R&D resources.

Innovations

Gislaved's contribution lies above all in its long specialization in tires intended for Nordic climates, expertise accumulated since the early 20th century in Sweden. The brand has developed tread patterns that clearly distinguish two winter philosophies: the Nord*Frost line (studdable, optimized for ice) and the Soft*Frost or friction line (non-studded, for snow and wet roads), reflecting the regulations and preferences that vary from one Nordic country to another. Integration into the Continental group since 1992 allows Gislaved to benefit from shared innovations in rubber compounds, tread modeling and manufacturing processes. On the sustainability front, the brand benefits from the group's direction toward reducing material footprint, without however positioning itself as a premium innovation brand: its role is rather to deliver proven winter performance at an accessible price.

Manufacturing

Gislaved's historic headquarters and first factory were located in the municipality of Gislaved, Sweden, where production operated until its closure in 2002. Since its integration into Continental AG, the brand no longer has its own factory: its tires are manufactured at the Continental group's plants spread across France, Slovakia, Romania and Portugal. There is no Gislaved factory in Canada or in Quebec. The North American presence is limited to distribution: the brand's winter tires are imported and sold in Canada by retailers such as Canadian Tire and various specialized online resellers, ensuring their availability in markets with harsh winters.

Reputation

Gislaved enjoys a solid and lasting reputation as a specialist in good-value winter tires, particularly in the Nordic countries the brand originates from. Tests and user reviews regularly highlight strong traction on packed snow and ice, notably for the studdable Nord*Frost models, as well as reassuring winter braking behavior. Without targeting the premium segment, the brand is seen as a safe bet for those looking for reliable winter performance without paying a major brand's price. In Quebec, where approved winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15, Gislaved models bearing the mountain-snowflake pictogram (3PMSF) make for a credible option to tackle snow, ice and extreme cold.
