History

Kenda Rubber Industrial Company was founded in 1962 by Chi-Pao Yang in the small town of Yuanlin, Taiwan, with around fifty employees producing bicycle tires and inner tubes. The founder's guiding principles were honesty, quality, service and innovation. The company gradually expanded its lineup: motorcycle and scooter tires in 1970, lawn and garden tires in 1978, golf cart tires in 1995, and then radial tires for passenger cars in 2001. A plant was established in Yun-Lin (Taiwan) in 1985. Starting in the 1990s, Kenda shifted from being a largely Taiwanese manufacturer to an international player: in 1990 it opened its first plant in Shenzhen, China, to increase capacity and access the growing Asian market. That same year, the stock was listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (ticker 2106). Global expansion continued with a plant in Indonesia (Serang, Banten Province) in 2014 and a second plant in Vietnam (Dong Nai Province) in 2015. In North America, Kenda established its U.S. headquarters in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and in 2015 opened the Kenda American Technical Center, a research facility of roughly 50,000 square feet located in the Akron area (Green, Ohio), where close to fifty engineers work. The company has developed engineering internship partnerships with the University of Akron and Ohio State University. Today, Kenda employs more than 11,000 people, operates several R&D centers and more than twenty plants and assembly facilities worldwide, spread across Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, the United States and Germany. In Canada, the brand is distributed by wholesalers and retailers, with no known local plant.

Technologies

Across its automotive lines, Kenda relies on randomized variable-pitch tread patterns and patented pitch sequences to reduce road noise, as well as all-season rubber compounds and a high siping density designed to improve grip on wet roads, in snow and on ice. The Klever A/T2 model earns 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) certification across all of its sizes, thanks to this siping density and a suitable compound. For trailers, the radial construction with twin steel belts reinforced by nylon plies is aimed at durability and a long service life. On the bicycle and ATV side, Kenda uses its K-Shield puncture protection, reinforced sidewalls and low-rolling-resistance compounds. ATV tires such as the Bear Claw use a rugged carcass of up to six plies and an integrated rim guard.

Innovations

The Kenda American Technical Center, opened in 2015 near Akron, is one of the region's largest tire research hubs, featuring an on-site test track, analysis benches and engineering offices; the company invested several tens of millions of dollars in it, with initial support from the JobsOhio agency. Kenda operates several R&D centers worldwide and advances its tread patterns, compounds and testing methods across product generations, such as the second generation of the Kenetica line or the 3G iterations of the KargoTrail line. Beyond the product itself, Kenda invests in training and the next generation: it launched the Kenda eUniversity online learning platform for retailers and their staff, and it forms sponsorship agreements with collegiate teams as well as cooperative engineering internship partnerships. The brand is also active in cycling and off-road competition, which fuels the development of its bicycle and ATV lines.

Manufacturing

Kenda's global headquarters is located in Yuanlin (Changhua County), Taiwan, where the company operates several sites, including the Yun-Lin plant. Production is spread across more than twenty plants and assembly facilities throughout Taiwan, China (first plant in Shenzhen in 1990), Vietnam (Dong Nai Province), Indonesia (Serang, Banten Province) and beyond. In North America, the U.S. headquarters is established in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and the Kenda American Technical Center, in the Akron area, brings together local research and engineering. In Canada, no Kenda plant is known: tires are imported and distributed by wholesalers and retailers, which makes the automotive, trailer, bicycle, motorcycle and ATV lines available in Quebec.

Reputation

Kenda has a reputation as an affordable brand offering good value for money rather than a premium positioning. Its ATV, trailer and bicycle tires are widely recognized as versatile, durable and economical choices, and the Bear Claw is often cited as an excellent all-purpose tire for ATVs and side-by-sides. On the automotive side, tests and reviews highlight decent dry behavior, reasonable wet grip and a relatively quiet ride for the category. In Quebec, winter interest centers mainly on the Klever A/T2, which is 3PMSF certified and meets the winter tire requirement from December 1 to March 15 for SUVs and light trucks; the trailer, bicycle and ATV lines serve distinct seasonal uses.
