History

Lassa's foundations date back to 1974, when the Turkish industrial group Sabancı and its partners launched the project in Kocaeli, Turkey. Tire production began in 1978 under the Lassa brand, making the company a pioneer in Turkish industrialization. In 1988, following a partnership between Sabancı Holding and Japan's Bridgestone Corporation, the entity took the name Brisa, a contraction of Bridgestone and Lassa. The full corporate name became Brisa Bridgestone Sabancı Lastik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. Lassa remains the group's historic commercial brand, while Bridgestone contributes its technical and industrial expertise. During the 1990s, Brisa experienced strong growth and earned numerous accolades: the National Quality Award in 1993, followed by the European Grand Prize for Quality in 1996, becoming the first Turkish company to receive this distinction. Today, Brisa ranks among the largest tire producers in Europe. The Lassa brand relies on two modern plants located in İzmit and Aksaray, Turkey, totaling roughly 500,000 m² of floor space, with a high production rate (a tire coming off the line every few seconds) and several thousand employees. The lineup covers passenger, SUV, light-truck, truck, bus, agricultural and off-road tires. Lassa is sold in more than 80 countries through a network of distributors selected for their location, logistics and experience, totaling thousands of points of sale. In North America, Lassa's presence remains limited and comes through importation: in Canada, several passenger and light-truck models are offered online by retailers such as Tire.ca. There is no Lassa plant in Canada or Quebec, so the brand reaches the market through distribution. Its consistent positioning remains that of an affordable brand, backed by the technology and R&D of the Brisa-Bridgestone group.

Technologies

Lassa tires are built on the research and development work of the Brisa group, which benefits from Bridgestone's technology transfer. The rubber compounds are designed to optimize grip on wet and dry surfaces while extending tread life. On fuel-efficient models, advanced polymers improve thermal conductivity, reduce heat buildup and promote low rolling resistance, and therefore lower fuel consumption. The tread patterns incorporate longitudinal water-evacuation grooves to limit hydroplaning, reinforced shoulders for cornering stability and, on commercial versions, robust belt structures with belt-edge protection rubber to withstand heavy loads and hot climates. Several lines display European labeling ratings (wet grip, noise, fuel efficiency) and TÜV SÜD certifications.

Innovations

Lassa's contribution lies above all in the local industrialization of the tire in Turkey and the gradual integration of Bridgestone technologies within Brisa. The group invests in smart factories in İzmit and Aksaray, where automation and quality control have been strengthened over the decades. On the validation side, several Lassa models have been subjected to testing by independent organizations: the Competus H/P notably won a comparison conducted by TÜV SÜD against several competitors, coming out on top for braking and handling on dry and wet surfaces as well as for hydroplaning. The brand has also developed sustainability-oriented lines, such as the fuel-efficient Greenways line with low rolling resistance, which aims to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. This approach is part of the sustainable growth strategy promoted by Brisa, which places innovation, safety and environmental responsibility at the heart of its product development.

Manufacturing

Lassa's headquarters and industrial operations are located in Turkey, under the umbrella of Brisa Bridgestone Sabancı. Production is handled by two plants: İzmit (Kocaeli region), the historic site, and Aksaray. Together they cover roughly 500,000 m² and employ several thousand people, placing Brisa among the major European tire producers. There is no Lassa plant in Canada or Quebec. In the North American market, the brand is present through importation and distribution: in Canada, online retailers such as Tire.ca offer passenger and light-truck models. Availability in Quebec therefore depends on the inventory of distributors and wholesalers who import the Lassa lines.

Reputation

Lassa enjoys the image of a budget brand offering attractive value for money, supported by its membership in the Brisa-Bridgestone group. Independent tests and user reviews are generally decent for the price: good longevity and honest wet grip on models like the Competus H/P or Driveways, with recurring reservations about road noise and comfort. In Quebec, relevance depends on the model: only the 3PMSF-certified winter versions (Snoways line) meet the winter-tire requirement in effect from December 1 to March 15; summer or all-season tires not marked 3PMSF are not compliant for this period. Local availability comes through importation.
