Tire brand
Marshal
Marshal is a tire brand created in 1984 by the South Korean manufacturer Kumho Tire.
Brand profile
Marshal is a tire brand created in 1984 by the South Korean manufacturer Kumho Tire. Positioned as an affordable lineup spanning the passenger, light truck, SUV, summer, winter and off-road segments, it long served as Kumho's international and secondary brand. In North America, including Canada, the Marshal lineup has gradually been consolidated under the Kumho banner while remaining familiar to drivers.
Positioning: Affordable passenger, SUV, light truck and winter tires derived from Kumho.
History
Marshal was born in 1984 as a brand of the South Korean group Kumho Tire. To understand its origins, you have to go back to 1960, when Park In-chon, founder of the Kumho Asiana group, launched a small tire production operation in Gwangju (then under the name Samyang Tire) to supply his bus company. The company grew quickly, began exporting as early as the 1960s, and then established itself among the ten largest tire manufacturers in the world by the early 1990s. It adopted the name Kumho Tire Co., Ltd. in 1996 and split off from Kumho Industrial in 2003. The Marshal brand historically served as a parallel, international lineup, sold in many markets (Europe, Southeast Asia, North America) with a budget positioning distinct from the flagship Kumho brand. The head office remains in Gwangju, South Korea, and Kumho operates several plants in Korea, China, Vietnam and the United States (Georgia). In 2018, following financial difficulties, the Chinese tire conglomerate Doublestar became the majority shareholder of Kumho Tire, which from then on placed Marshal under the same ownership. In the Canadian and North American market, Marshal was sold for years in the passenger, winter, SUV and off-road segments, often through big-box retailers and specialty distributors. Over time, most of the Marshal catalog was brought closer to, or rebranded under, the Kumho name in this region, rather than simply discontinued. For a Quebec driver looking to replace a Marshal tire, the modern equivalent is generally found in the corresponding Kumho lineup. The Marshal brand nonetheless remains present and active in other markets, particularly in Asia.
Technologies
As a Kumho lineup, Marshal benefits from the Korean manufacturer's technical platforms rather than entirely separate developments. The passenger tires rely on silica rubber compounds aimed at balancing wet-road grip, durability and low rolling resistance, with continuous center-rib tread patterns for directional stability and stiff shoulders for cornering grip. The WinterCraft winter models use compounds suited to low temperatures, multidirectional 3D sipes and directional tread patterns that promote the evacuation of water and slush, with some designed to be studdable. The Road Venture off-road tires use casings reinforced with high-tenacity steel belts, spiral-wound nylon plies and compounds resistant to cutting and chipping for off-road use.
Innovations
The advances attributable to Marshal stem essentially from Kumho's research and development, which has technical centers in Korea, China, North America and Europe. Kumho has notably invested in high-silica-content compounds to reduce rolling resistance and fuel consumption, in simulation-optimized asymmetric and directional tread patterns, as well as in road-noise-reduction technologies. The group has also developed tires geared toward electric vehicles and winter lineups certified for harsh climates. On the competition and image side, Kumho has supplied tires in motorsport and has worked as an original-equipment supplier with several automakers. In terms of sustainability, efforts focus on lightening structures, improving mileage and reducing the environmental footprint of compounds. The Marshal brand has benefited indirectly from these innovations in its consumer models.
Manufacturing
The head office and historic heart of production are located in Gwangju, South Korea. Kumho, the owner of Marshal, operates several manufacturing sites in Korea, China and Vietnam, as well as a plant in Georgia, in the United States, which serves the North American market. There is no Marshal or Kumho plant in Quebec or Canada: the Canadian presence relies on importing and a network of distributors and retailers. In Quebec, the products are sold by tire dealers and specialty centers, and several Marshal winter models have been distributed there. Today, the North American offering is largely grouped under the Kumho brand.
Reputation
Marshal enjoys a reputation as a budget brand offering decent value for money, without claiming to compete with the premium segments. User reviews and comparison tests generally place it in the middle of the pack, with honest performance for everyday use and an attractive purchase price. For Quebec, its relevance depends on the model: the WinterCraft winter tires, certified 3PMSF (mountain-snowflake symbol), meet the provincial requirement from December 1 to March 15 and suit a tight budget, while summer models such as the MH15 or the MU12 are not designed for winter. The alignment with the Kumho brand provides reassurance about long-term support and availability.
