Brand profile
Maxam is a manufacturer of specialized tires designed for off-the-road (OTR) vehicles, construction, industry, agriculture, forestry, and mining. The brand does not make passenger tires: it focuses on loaders, articulated dump trucks, graders, forklifts, and heavy equipment. Maxam is now owned by the Sailun group and serves a global network, including Canada.
Positioning: Positioning: Off-the-road (OTR), industrial, agricultural, mining, and solid tires for heavy equipment.
History
Maxam traces its roots to the OTR segment of the Mai Group, a tire retreader and later manufacturer based in Verona, Italy. In 2011, the Mai Group's OTR assets, which included a plant located in Dongying, in China's Shandong province, were sold to investors who formed Maxam Tire International, headquartered in Luxembourg. The Maxam brand as we know it today took shape around 2013, building on this industrial heritage in construction and off-road applications. The brand emphasizes a claimed expertise of more than fifty years in the design and engineering of specialized tires. Maxam is now the off-road brand of the Sailun group, a manufacturer founded in 1990 that was the first privately held tire company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and which ranks among the world's twelve largest tire makers, with a presence in more than 167 countries. Under Sailun, Maxam benefits from an expanded industrial infrastructure comprising several manufacturing and distribution centers spread around the world. The lineup has diversified to cover about ten segments: agriculture, construction, forestry, industrial material handling and forklifts, surface mining, underground mining, pneumatic off-road, solid OTR, rubber tracks, and truck-bus radial tires. In North America, Maxam strengthened its presence starting in the mid-2010s, notably by opening warehouses in the United States to bring supply closer to distributors and end users. The brand today maintains commercial operations and regional support in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with dedicated representatives. Certain models, such as the MS405, have earned OEM approval, a sign of recognition by equipment manufacturers. Maxam thus positions itself as a premium replacement solution in the demanding niche of specialized tires.
Technologies
Maxam tires are built on proven off-road designs. The loader and dump truck models use lug tread patterns standardized to the E3/L3 and E4/L4 industry codes, which balance traction with resistance to wear and cuts. Several designs incorporate reinforced and staggered lugs to reduce vibration at transport speeds, a thick undertread that increases protection against punctures, and a wide, flat footprint that distributes wear and improves stability. The increased tread depth and tread-to-void ratio aim to extend service life and lower the hourly operating cost. Maxam offers quality casings suitable for retreading, as well as options in radial or bias-ply construction depending on the application. The lineup also includes solid (airless) tires for environments with a high risk of punctures.
Innovations
Innovation at Maxam revolves around four research and development centers located in China, North America, Vietnam, and Europe. The brand claims mastery of raw materials, rubber compound formulation, and synthetic rubber, supported by manufacturing equipment comparable to that of top-tier manufacturers. Products undergo testing and certification in accordance with international standards, with testing partnerships in Europe, notably with German certification bodies. Among the brand's notable developments is the solid OTR tire line, including the MS708 launched in the early 2020s, which offers a maintenance-free, puncture-proof solution for wheel loaders operating in metal recovery, recycling, and waste management. The OEM approval of the MS405 by a major heavy equipment manufacturer illustrates Maxam's commitment to meeting OEM requirements. The continual expansion of available sizes reflects a sustained effort to cover a wide range of machines.
Manufacturing
Maxam's industrial heritage goes back to a plant located in Dongying, in China's Shandong province, which originated from the OTR assets of Italy's Mai Group. Under the ownership of the Sailun group, the brand now relies on an expanded industrial network comprising several manufacturing and distribution centers worldwide, along with four R&D centers in China, North America, Vietnam, and Europe. In Canada, Maxam does not own a plant but maintains a commercial presence with sales representatives and regional support. In Quebec, Maxam tires are available through distributors and off-road and industrial tire specialists, who serve construction sites, quarries, mines, farms, and material handling centers.
Reputation
Maxam enjoys a reputation as a quality replacement solution in the specialized tire niche, with positioning often seen as more accessible than that of top-tier brands. The brand's presence in public tenders and its OEM approval on certain models reinforce its credibility with fleets and equipment managers. Because these are off-road, industrial, and agricultural tires rather than road tires, the concepts of winter tire or 3PMSF certification do not apply. In Quebec, Maxam's relevance lies instead in its ability to equip loaders, dump trucks, graders, forklifts, and heavy machinery working on construction sites, in quarries, mines, and fields, with attention paid to hourly operating cost and durability.
