History
Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels was founded in 1963 in the United States by Marion Lee "Mickey" Thompson and engineer Gene McMannis. A driver and builder, Thompson became the first American to break 400 mph in 1960, reaching a top speed of 406.60 mph behind the wheel of the Challenger 1 on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Because the tire makers of the day were reluctant to develop a tire capable of such speeds, Thompson and McMannis started their own company, initially focused on racing. As early as 1963, they developed a low-profile open-wheel racing tire with a soft compound that lowered the cars' center of gravity, then offered a matching 12-inch wheel. The brand quickly established itself as a benchmark in drag racing and off-road tires, two fields that remain its foundation. Over the decades, Mickey Thompson expanded its lineup to include all-terrain and mud tires for light trucks and SUVs, as well as retro-styled fitments for muscle cars and hot rods. In 2003, the company was acquired by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, giving it access to greater manufacturing resources while preserving its enthusiast identity. In June 2021, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company completed its acquisition of Cooper for roughly 2.8 billion dollars, bringing Mickey Thompson under the Goodyear umbrella. The brand remains a separately operated subsidiary, and some models are now produced at Goodyear facilities, notably in Akron, Ohio. Available throughout the North American market, including Canada, Mickey Thompson is distributed through a network of specialty retailers and performance shops, Quebec included.
Technologies
Several signature technologies set the brand apart. SideBiters®, aggressive lugs molded into the sidewall, increase traction in soft terrain and protect the sidewalls against cuts. PowerPly™ construction (a 3-ply casing) reinforces the toughness and puncture resistance of light-truck and SUV tires under load. Recent all-terrain lines use silica-reinforced compounds (T4 compound) to improve wear, wet grip, and on-road durability. Asymmetric tread patterns with large voids promote self-cleaning and reduce noise, while variable draft angles and stone ejectors limit pebble retention. On the racing side, the R2 rubber compound and steel-belted radial construction deliver launch grip in drag tires.
Innovations
Born from competition, Mickey Thompson claims numerous industry firsts dating back to 1960: wide, low racing tires, 70/60/50 profile series, raised white lettering, and directional sidewall lugs. The development of tires capable of very high speeds, the very reason the company was founded, illustrates this engineering culture born of real on-track needs. R&D remains anchored in drag racing and extreme off-road use, where products are proven before being adapted for the street. The brand also collaborates with well-known athletes, notably off-road racer Brian Deegan, whose name is associated with an all-terrain and mud line. More recently, earning the 3PMSF winter rating on certain sizes of all-terrain tires (Baja Boss A/T) reflects a move toward four-season versatility, rare in the reinforced-casing tire category.
Manufacturing
Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels is an American brand, operated separately within Goodyear since the acquisition of Cooper Tire in 2021. Part of its production takes place at Goodyear facilities in the United States, including the plant and innovation center in Akron, Ohio, where drag racing tires are notably manufactured. The brand does not operate its own plant in Canada. In Quebec, its tires are offered through specialty off-road and performance retailers, parts shops, and North American distributors, who handle supply and after-sales service for local customers.
Reputation
Mickey Thompson enjoys strong recognition among off-road, drag racing, and muscle car enthusiasts, driven by a racing heritage. Its mud and all-terrain tires are valued for their aggressive looks, sidewall toughness, and traction in difficult terrain, as confirmed by specialized testing. In Quebec, interest comes mainly from owners of modified trucks and SUVs as well as hot rod enthusiasts. For on-road winter use, only the Baja Boss A/T offers the 3PMSF rating in certain sizes; mud, drag, and retro tires are not designed to replace an approved winter tire during the mandatory period from December 1 to March 15.
