Tire brand
Mitas
Mitas is a Czech tire brand specializing in the off-road and two-wheel segments.
Brand profile
Mitas is a Czech tire brand specializing in the off-road and two-wheel segments. Founded in Prague in the 1930s, it designs agricultural, industrial, material-handling and construction tires, along with a well-regarded motorcycle lineup (street, adventure, off-road and racing). Now owned by the Japanese group Yokohama, Mitas is distributed worldwide through the Yokohama TWS network, including in Canada.
Positioning: Agricultural, industrial and off-road material-handling tires, plus a full motorcycle lineup.
History
Mitas traces its history back to the 1930s, when tire production began in Prague, Czechoslovakia: the Prague-Strašnice plant opened in 1934 and became the brand's industrial birthplace. The "Mitas" name took hold in 1947, the year the company built its first motorcycle tires for speedway racing, marking the start of a long tradition in motorcycle sport. Over the decades, production expanded to other Czech sites, notably Zlín and Otrokovice, while the brand simultaneously developed its agricultural and industrial lines, long centered on the European market. In 2016, Mitas was integrated into the Swedish group Trelleborg, within the Trelleborg Wheel Systems division, considerably broadening its commercial and technological reach in the off-road tire sector. A major change came in 2023: the Japanese group Yokohama Rubber acquired Trelleborg Wheel Systems for roughly two billion euros, making Mitas one of the flagship brands of the new Yokohama TWS entity, alongside Trelleborg, Maximo and Cultor. This consolidation positions Yokohama among the world's leaders in off-road tires. Under this banner, Mitas retains its identity and product lines while benefiting from a truly global distribution network. Production has historically relied on the Czech sites, as well as plants in Slovenia, Serbia, Sri Lanka and the Americas. Of note, in 2026 Yokohama announced the planned closure of the oldest Prague plant, with off-road production transferred to other group sites. In North America, Mitas is present through Yokohama TWS, with dedicated structures in the United States and Canada handling sales, technical support and distribution to agricultural, industrial and motorcycle networks.
Technologies
In its agricultural lines, Mitas highlights advanced VF (Very High Flexion) technologies, which make it possible to carry heavy loads at reduced pressure in order to limit soil compaction and widen the tire's footprint. Optimized radial constructions aim to lower rolling resistance and improve fuel efficiency, while tread patterns such as the saw-tooth profile balance traction and ride comfort. On the motorcycle side, Mitas develops Multi Compound Tread Technology (MCTT), which combines several rubber compounds on a single tread to pair center durability with side-to-side grip, along with a high silica content for grip on cold and wet surfaces.
Innovations
Mitas's heritage of innovation is rooted in competition: as early as 1947 the brand was building speedway tires, and it remains a recognized supplier in off-road sport, enduro and rally-raid today, where its Dakar and Ultra Heavy Duty lines are proven in extreme conditions. This experience feeds the transfer of technology to production motorcycle tires, particularly reinforced casings and multi-compound rubber. On the agricultural side, Mitas continues its research into soil protection: its recent VF tires favor better load distribution, an enlarged footprint and reduced rolling resistance, contributing to more efficient operations and less degradation of cultivated land. The development of optimized-geometry tread patterns and reinforced sidewalls illustrates this ongoing effort to improve durability, stability and performance, supported by the R&D resources of the Yokohama TWS group.
Manufacturing
Mitas's industrial birthplace is in the Czech Republic, with the historic sites of Prague, Zlín and Otrokovice, long the heart of agricultural, industrial and motorcycle production. Manufacturing also relies on plants in Slovenia, Serbia, Sri Lanka and the Americas. Since the 2023 acquisition, the entire operation falls under Yokohama TWS, which announced in 2026 the planned closure of the oldest Prague plant and the transfer of off-road production. In Canada and Quebec, Mitas has no plant: the brand is present there through distribution, handled by Yokohama TWS and its network of agricultural, industrial and motorcycle retailers.
Reputation
Mitas enjoys a solid reputation in its specialty niches, seen as a brand offering good value for money in agricultural, industrial and material-handling tires. Its motorcycle lineup is appreciated by adventure, enduro and rally enthusiasts, where road tests highlight its ruggedness and on-road/off-road versatility. In Quebec, Mitas's relevance comes mainly from professional uses: farm machinery, loaders, material handling and job sites, where the brand is accessible through the Yokohama TWS network. Its street motorcycle tires, however, are not designed for snow or ice; the adventure models serve off-road and gravel use across the three non-winter seasons.
