History

Pirelli was born in Milan in 1872 when engineer Giovanni Battista Pirelli founded the limited partnership "G.B. Pirelli & C." to manufacture elastic rubber products. The first plant opened in 1873. The company quickly expanded its production: rubber bands for horse-drawn carriages (1885), its first bicycle tire (1894), and then automobile tires starting in 1901. Over the course of the 20th century, Pirelli diversified its activities, notably into cables and coatings, while consolidating its tire expertise. The most significant milestone came in the late 1940s: designed beginning in 1949, the Cinturato became Pirelli's first commercially produced radial tire in 1953. Its rigid belt, placed between the carcass and the tread, markedly improved safety, road holding and wear resistance compared with the bias-ply tires of the era, placing Pirelli among the pioneers of radial technology. In the following decades, the brand resolutely steered its strategy toward the high-end, sporty segment, developing the ultra-high-performance P Zero range, prized by manufacturers of prestige vehicles. This motorsport focus culminated in 2011, when Pirelli became the exclusive tire supplier to Formula 1, a role renewed through 2027 and extended to the Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships. In terms of ownership, the Chinese state-owned chemical group ChemChina acquired control of Pirelli in 2015. In April 2025, the Italian holding company Camfin, linked to the family of Marco Tronchetti Provera, strengthened its stake alongside other investors. Today, Pirelli retains its historic headquarters in Milan's Bicocca district and maintains a worldwide industrial and commercial presence across Europe, North and South America, Asia and beyond.

Technologies

Pirelli relies on an engineering approach centered on performance and a precise match between tire and vehicle ("Perfect Fit"), with manufacturer-specific approvals marked on the sidewall. Several key technologies shape its lineup. Run Flat technology allows you to keep driving for a limited distance despite a loss of pressure. Seal Inside, thanks to an internal self-sealing layer, plugs most punctures caused by objects and maintains pressure. The Elect marking designates tires optimized for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, reducing rolling resistance, handling instant torque and limiting rolling noise. Pirelli is also developing the Cyber Tyre, an integrated hardware and software system that collects data from sensors placed inside the tire and transmits it to the vehicle. What sets Pirelli apart is above all its premium orientation and its close partnerships with prestige automakers, which give rise to custom, marked tires (for example N, MO, AO, J or *).

Innovations

The 1953 Cinturato remains Pirelli's foundational innovation: the brand's first radial tire, it helped make universal an architecture that is standard today. Formula 1 serves as a true laboratory: since 2011, Pirelli has designed compounds there with targeted behaviors (soft to hard compounds, intermediates and wets), R&D that then feeds into high-performance road tires. The brand has also pushed innovation on the process side, notably with its robotic MIRS system, used at its U.S. plant to produce premium tires. More recently, the effort has centered on electrification, with the Elect range designed for the demands of electric vehicles, and on connectivity, with the Cyber Tyre that turns the tire into a data source. Sustainability is taking on a growing role: Pirelli has had materials certified to recognized standards and is working to incorporate renewable or recycled materials into its products, while reducing the footprint of its production sites.

Manufacturing

Pirelli keeps its head office in Milan, in the Bicocca district, and maintains an industrial presence spread across many countries, with around twenty production sites worldwide. In North America, the brand owns a plant in Rome, Georgia, in the United States, whose first tires rolled out in 2002. This heavily automated site specializes in large-diameter premium tires for cars, light trucks and especially the SUVs of the North American market. This location brings production closer to Canadian needs and makes it easier, for the Quebec market, to access high-end ranges suited to the large vehicles that are very common in the region.

Reputation

Pirelli enjoys a strong high-end, sporty image, reinforced by its presence in Formula 1 and by its approvals with prestige automakers. In comparative tests, its performance tires regularly rank among the benchmarks for road holding on dry and wet surfaces, while some lines geared more toward comfort or longevity receive more mixed reviews. For Quebec, the focus is on winter: the Winter Sottozero range delivers sustained winter performance with 3PMSF certification, suited to powerful vehicles, while the Ice family (including Ice Zero) targets the intense cold and icy road conditions typical of the northern climate.
