Brand profile

Sava is a Slovenian tire brand founded in Kranj, and is today a subsidiary of the American group Goodyear. Positioned in the budget and mid-range segment, it covers passenger cars, SUVs, light commercial vehicles, as well as heavy-duty vehicles (trucks, trailers, buses). With a strong presence in Central Europe, Sava builds its appeal on accessible value for money backed by its group's technologies.

History

Sava's story begins in Kranj, Slovenia, where a rubber-goods factory was established around 1920-1921 under the name Vulkan. In 1931, the company came under the control of the Austrian manufacturer Semperit, which built up the site's rubber and tire operations. After the Second World War, in 1946, the plant adopted the name SAVA, after the river that runs through the region, and launched mass production of automobile tires. During the Yugoslav era, Sava became one of the leading tire producers in Central and Eastern Europe, expanding its lineup to passenger, commercial, and heavy-duty tires. The major turning point came in the late 1990s: in 1998, the American group Goodyear Tire & Rubber acquired a 60% stake in the joint venture Sava Tires. Goodyear then raised its share to roughly 80% in 2002, before taking full control of Sava Tires d.o.o. around 2004. From that point on, the brand was integrated into Goodyear's portfolio as a budget brand, benefiting from the group's technologies, research centers, and manufacturing standards. In 2011, the industrial entity in Kranj was renamed Goodyear Dunlop Sava Tires, reflecting its role within a group that also brings together the Goodyear and Dunlop brands. The Kranj plant remains an important production site for the group in Europe, manufacturing passenger, commercial, and heavy-duty tires, along with other rubber products. Sava is still marketed primarily in Europe, where it is distributed as an affordable alternative to premium brands. Its presence in North America and Canada remains marginal and comes mainly through importing and specialized distribution rather than through an extensive official network.

Technologies

As a Goodyear-owned brand, Sava benefits from the group's technology transfer, adapted to a budget positioning. Its passenger and SUV tires rely on silica-based rubber compounds to improve wet grip and reduce rolling resistance, which helps fuel economy. Directional and asymmetric tread patterns optimize water evacuation and limit hydroplaning. On the Eskimo winter tires, multiple sipes and compounds that stay soft at low temperatures increase traction on snow and ice. On the heavy-duty side, the Avant, Orjak, and Cargo ranges use rugged casings, reinforced shoulders, and plies designed to boost mileage, resist damage, and allow retreading. Several lines carry the 3PMSF marking.

Innovations

Innovation at Sava falls within the continuity of Goodyear's research and development rather than in independent labs. Progress focuses mainly on optimizing silica-based compounds, reducing rolling resistance for greater energy efficiency, and improving the longevity of retread-capable heavy-duty casings. The Eskimo winter ranges have evolved over the generations toward better performance on snow, ice, and cold ground, with some versions earning the 3PMSF certification. On the commercial side, the 4 and then 5 series (Avant, Orjak, Cargo) introduced high-load-capacity constructions suited to newer vehicles, particularly electric-powered ones that place greater demand on the steering axle. Sava also highlights durability through high mileage and retreadability, which extend the useful life of the casing and lower the operating cost per kilometer.

Manufacturing

Sava's industrial and historical heart is in Kranj, Slovenia, where the Goodyear Dunlop Sava Tires entity operates a major site producing passenger, commercial, and heavy-duty tires, as well as other rubber goods. Manufacturing of Sava products relies on Goodyear's European industrial ecosystem, which oversees development and quality standards. In North America and Quebec, Sava does not have a broad official distribution network; its availability comes through importing, specialized distributors, and the affordable-tire market. Quebec buyers can therefore find certain models through resellers, though without a presence as well established as that of mainstream North American brands.

Reputation

Sava enjoys a reputation as a reliable budget brand, supported by its membership in the Goodyear group. In European comparative tests, its passenger and winter tires generally fall into the mid-range category: without competing with the top tier, they deliver decent performance at an attractive price, which makes them a popular choice for drivers on a tight budget. The Eskimo winter tires are often cited as good value for money in snow. In Quebec, where winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15, only passenger and SUV models bearing the 3PMSF pictogram meet this requirement; the heavy-duty range is aimed instead at commercial transport and fleets.
