Tire brand
Trelleborg Tires
Trelleborg Tires is a Swedish brand specializing in off-road tires for agricultural, forestry, material-handling, and construction machinery.
Brand profile
Trelleborg Tires is a Swedish brand specializing in off-road tires for agricultural, forestry, material-handling, and construction machinery. Founded in 1905 in Trelleborg, Sweden, it is today part of the Japanese group Yokohama Rubber, under the Yokohama TWS entity. The company designs tires and complete wheels for tractors, forklifts, and industrial equipment, with no activity in passenger or winter tires.
Positioning: Positioning: Off-road agricultural, forestry, industrial, and material-handling tires for professional machinery.
History
Trelleborg was founded in 1905 in the Swedish town of Trelleborg, on the initiative of Henry Dunker and Johan Kock, to manufacture rubber bicycle tires. The business grew during the First World War, with the Swedish Army becoming a major customer: its workforce rose from 150 employees to more than 1,000, and the company began its international expansion. Over the course of the 20th century, Trelleborg diversified into industrial rubber products and was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, with its share of foreign sales climbing sharply between 1950 and 1970. From the 1980s and 1990s onward, the group refocused and then refined its strategy around specialized industrial applications. The tire division took shape under the name Trelleborg Wheel Systems, concentrated on off-highway tires for agriculture, forestry, material handling, and construction, growing through both internal development and acquisitions. The most significant recent turning point came in 2022: Japanese manufacturer Yokohama Rubber Co. acquired all of Trelleborg Wheel Systems Holding AB for approximately 2.3 billion dollars, a transaction finalized in the spring of 2022. The Trelleborg commercial brand was retained, and the business is now operated under the Yokohama TWS entity, which has become one of the world's leading off-road tire makers. The product mix reflects the brand's specialization: agricultural tires account for roughly 60% of volume, industrial tires about 20%, with the remainder split between construction equipment and motorcycle tires. In North America, the group operates a tractor-tire plant in Charles City, Iowa, which supplies the North American agricultural market, including Canada and Quebec, where Trelleborg is distributed through networks specializing in agricultural and industrial tires.
Technologies
Trelleborg's technical signature in agriculture is ProgressiveTraction technology, based on a double-edged lug: a second lug edge engages more of the contact patch with the ground to increase traction, clear mud, and stabilize the ride. The brand also applies VF (Very High Flexion) standards, which make it possible to carry a given load at reduced pressure, or a heavier load at the same pressure, in order to limit soil compaction. PFO (Pressure Field Operations) technology optimizes behavior at very low speeds during demanding field work, combining increased load capacity with low pressure. On the material-handling side, Trelleborg develops solid resilient tires built from multiple layers and compounds, with the Pit Stop Line, a wear marker that indicates the exact moment for replacement.
Innovations
Trelleborg combines off-road engineering with research into the soil-tire contact patch. Its PneuTrac range illustrates a hybrid approach: it marries a radial agricultural tire with track-like benefits thanks to an "Omega" sidewall architecture, generating an elongated footprint for greater flotation, traction, and lateral stability without sacrificing comfort or fuel economy. The company also focuses on sustainability: the XP1000 material-handling tire incorporates three internal layers engineered with a fiber compound made from recycled materials, and offers the non-marking, electrically conductive ProTEX compound for potentially explosive environments. In agriculture, the ProgressiveTraction ranges target certified wear life of up to 5,000 hours along with measured gains in traction and durability over competing products. The brand's R&D is geared toward reducing soil compaction, improving machine energy efficiency, and extending tire service life in intensive, prolonged use.
Manufacturing
The brand's historic headquarters is located in Trelleborg, Sweden, with the business now managed under the Yokohama TWS entity. At the time of the Yokohama acquisition, the industrial network comprised 14 plants spread across nine countries: seven in Europe (Italy, Latvia, Serbia, Slovenia, and three in the Czech Republic), two in the United States, one in Brazil, and four in Asia (two in China, two in Sri Lanka). The American plant in Charles City, Iowa, specializes in tractor tires and serves the North American market. In Quebec, Trelleborg has no plant: the brand is offered through distributors and retailers specializing in agricultural, forestry, and industrial tires.
Reputation
In professional circles, Trelleborg enjoys a strong reputation for premium off-road tires, particularly among high-horsepower farming operations and material-handling operators. Tests and technical communications highlight traction gains, reduced soil compaction thanks to VF and ProgressiveTraction technologies, and high durability. Because this is an off-road brand rather than a passenger one, the concept of a 3PMSF winter tire and Quebec's December 1 to March 15 requirement do not apply. In Quebec, Trelleborg's relevance lies in agriculture, forestry, job sites, and warehouses, where its tractor, equipment, and forklift tires are sought after for their performance and longevity.
