Deepal

Deepal is a Chinese new-energy vehicle (NEV) brand owned by Changan Automobile, one of the oldest automotive groups in China, whose roots trace back to 1862 and which today ranks among the country's leading manufacturers. The brand originates from the Changan New Energy Automobile entity, created by Changan to develop its electrified lineups. First known under the Chinese name "Changan Shenlan," it saw its international name "Deepal" unveiled in 2023, the year it became a distinct brand within the group, with Changan retaining the majority stake. The first production model, the SL03 sedan, was launched in 2022, quickly followed by a lineup combining sedans and sport utility vehicles (SUVs). From the outset, Deepal positioned itself as a young, technology-driven brand focused on electrification, targeting an urban clientele attentive to design and connected features. The brand draws on Changan's industrial scale and engineering as well as partnerships with leading suppliers, notably for batteries and driver-assistance systems. Production has grown sharply, rising from roughly 129,000 units in 2023 to nearly 244,000 in 2024, a sign of a rapid ramp-up. Starting in 2023-2024, Deepal began a sustained international expansion: Thailand (the L07 and S07 models imported from China), Australia, then several markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Asia and a few European countries. In North America, Deepal is not, to date, marketed. Chinese electric vehicles face high tariffs in both Canada and the United States, as well as a restrictive regulatory framework, so no official imports or dealer network exist in the Quebec or North American market. Consumers here know the brand mainly through international media coverage rather than through a local presence.

Technologies

Technologies, innovations and platforms

Deepal builds its vehicles on Changan's new-energy platforms (known as the EPA families), designed specifically for electrification and adapted to each segment. The brand offers two main powertrain approaches: full battery-electric (BEV) and the range extender (EREV), where an electric motor handles propulsion while a small gasoline engine serves solely as a generator to recharge the battery, reducing range anxiety. The battery packs and cell chemistry rely on major suppliers in the sector, and the high-voltage architectures aim for fast charging. On the cabin and safety side, Deepal emphasizes large touchscreens, extensive connectivity and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), with some recent models integrating assisted-driving solutions developed through a technology partnership.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses

Positioning

A recent Chinese brand from Changan, focused on electric and range-extender vehicles with a modern design, absent from the North American market.

Reputation

As a recent brand, Deepal enjoys a reputation built mainly internationally rather than in North America, where it is absent. Reviews published in Australia, Thailand and the Middle East generally praise its refined design, rich equipment levels and price-to-features ratio, while noting that the calibration of some driver-assistance systems could be improved and that the brand is still young in terms of proven reliability and service network. Resale value remains difficult to estimate outside China owing to the limited historical track record. In Quebec, no local data on reliability, warranty or residual value exists, since the vehicles are not sold there officially.

Strengths

Main strengths: reliance on Changan's industrial scale and engineering, modern design, richly equipped and connected cabins, and a dual powertrain offering (full electric and range-extender EREV) that addresses range anxiety. Its aggressive pricing in the markets where it is present and its rapid production ramp-up reflect an ambitious and well-funded brand.

Points to watch

Limits to consider: a very young brand, hence little track record on long-term reliability and resale value. A complete absence from North America, which means no dealer network, no local warranty, no official parts supply and uncertain homologation in Canada. The calibration of some driver-assistance systems and the brand image still need to be consolidated outside China, where awareness remains limited.

Production and compatibility

Plants, tires and wheels

Production

Deepal's production is concentrated in China, mainly in the Chongqing region, the industrial cradle of its parent company Changan Automobile, which provides the manufacturing capacity, platforms and engineering. Vehicles destined for export markets (Thailand, Australia, the Middle East, Southeast and South Asia, certain European countries) are imported from China. Deepal has no assembly plant in North America and neither produces nor officially imports vehicles there. No assembly line, parts distribution center or brand dealer network is established in Canada, the United States or Quebec, which clearly sets Deepal apart from locally established manufacturers.

Tires and wheels

Since Deepal does not sell its vehicles in Quebec, no original-equipment fitment is officially certified here. As a guideline, its electric sedans and SUVs fall within the compact-to-midsize segments, where wheels of 18 to 20 inches are commonly found, or even larger on high-end versions. Heavy EVs (batteries) put significant demands on tires: high load ratings and low-rolling-resistance tires are typical. In Quebec, compliant winter tires remain mandatory from December 1 to March 15. In the absence of a local technical sheet, always verify the exact size, bolt pattern, offset and load/speed ratings on the vehicle rather than assuming.
