Ineos

Ineos Automotive is a young British brand, founded in 2017 by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a chemical engineer and businessman who heads the Ineos petrochemical group, which he had created in 1998. The origin of the project is now well known: an off-road enthusiast, Ratcliffe saw a gap in the market after the original version of the Land Rover Defender was discontinued. The idea of a rugged, no-compromise utilitarian 4x4 is said to have been born during a discussion among friends at a London pub in Belgravia, The Grenadier, which gave its name to the brand's first vehicle. Ineos Automotive Limited assembled a team of automotive professionals to turn this vision into a homologated, reliable product. The project was unveiled publicly in July 2020. After initially considering a plant in Wales, Ineos purchased the Hambach factory in France from Mercedes-Benz in December 2020, which had previously produced the Smart, to assemble the Grenadier there. Series production began in October 2022, with the first deliveries in December 2022. The brand combines a rugged British spirit, German-inspired engineering and a powertrain stemming from a technology partnership with BMW signed in 2019. The lineup expanded in July 2023 with the Quartermaster pickup, followed by a chassis-cab version. In North America, the Grenadier and the Quartermaster are sold in the United States and Canada, with the Quartermaster notably able to sidestep the U.S. 25% customs tariff on light trucks thanks to its pickup body. Ineos is also developing electric (production announced in Graz, Austria) and hydrogen fuel-cell variants, a sign of a brand seeking to establish itself for the long term despite still-modest volumes.

Technologies

Technologies, innovations and platforms

The Grenadier is built on a deliberately traditional architecture designed for severe off-roading: a box-section ladder-frame chassis, solid Carraro axles front and rear, and a five-link suspension with Eibach coil springs offering great articulation. All-wheel drive is permanent, with a transfer case featuring a low-range reduction (a short ratio of about 2.5:1) and optional front and rear locking differentials. The engines come from BMW as part of a partnership signed in 2019: a 3.0L B58 turbocharged inline-six gasoline engine (about 286 hp) and a 3.0L B57 inline-six diesel (about 245 to 249 hp, rich in torque). A ZF eight-speed automatic transmission equips all models. Ineos is also working on battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell variants for the future.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses

Positioning

A recent British brand offering rugged, no-compromise utilitarian 4x4s with BMW powertrains, designed for serious off-road use.

Reputation

The Grenadier is praised for its solid build quality, inherited from the former Mercedes plant in Hambach, and for its remarkable off-road capabilities thanks to its solid axles and articulation superior to that of a Wrangler or an original Bronco. Reviews nonetheless point out an old-fashioned on-road drive: slow and vague steering, frequent corrections, and above all high fuel consumption. The infotainment system has drawn some reliability criticism. As a recent brand, Ineos still lacks a track record on long-term reliability and resale value; insurance and maintenance costs tend to be higher because of its niche character.

Strengths

Top-tier ruggedness and off-road capability thanks to the ladder-frame chassis and solid axles, solid build quality, well-regarded BMW inline-six engines, a proven ZF transmission, a durable and repairable utilitarian design, and a distinctive, functional look. The Grenadier meets a genuine demand for a serious, no-compromise 4x4 that other manufacturers have abandoned.

Points to watch

High fuel consumption, rustic on-road behavior (slow steering, frequent corrections, average braking), high purchase price, and significant maintenance and insurance costs tied to its niche status. As a young brand: a still-limited network, little hindsight on long-term reliability and resale value, and infotainment that could be improved. A specialized vehicle ill-suited to strictly urban use.

Production and compatibility

Plants, tires and wheels

Production

Production of the Grenadier is centralized at the Hambach plant in Moselle (France), purchased from Mercedes-Benz in December 2020, where the Smart was previously assembled. This is where the Station Wagon, Utility Wagon and Quartermaster pickup versions are built. Ineos does not currently operate any vehicle assembly plant in North America: the vehicles sold in the United States and Canada are imported from Europe. The future electric variant of the Grenadier is expected to be produced in Graz, Austria, at the subcontractor Magna Steyr. The North American network therefore relies on imports and a dealer network rather than on local production.

Tires and wheels

The Grenadier favors common, easy-to-find off-road tire sizes. As original equipment, it typically comes with 17- or 18-inch wheels fitted with BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires, in rugged formats close to 32 inches in diameter (for example in 17-inch or 18-inch sizes depending on the trim). The 17-inch size, fitted on the Quartermaster, is deliberately widespread worldwide to make replacement easier. In Quebec, dedicated winter tires are essential on these heavy vehicles: favor winter or all-terrain tires certified with the mountain-snowflake symbol. For exact sizes, wheels and bolt pattern, always verify according to the year, the trim and the vehicle's specifications.
