Sehol

Sehol (思皓, transcribed Sī hào) is a Chinese automotive brand launched on April 24, 2018. It was born within the joint venture bringing together China's state-owned automaker JAC Motors (Anhui Jianghuai Automobile), based in Hefei in Anhui province, Germany's Volkswagen Group, and its Spanish subsidiary SEAT. The brand was originally called "Sol," a Spanish word meaning "sun," a nod to SEAT's Iberian roots and to renewable energy, with the initial goal of producing affordable electric vehicles for the Chinese market. The first model, the E20X electric SUV, was unveiled as early as 2018. In 2020, Volkswagen raised its stake to roughly 75% in the joint venture, which was renamed Volkswagen Anhui, and it also acquired a significant share of the state-owned group that owns JAC in a deal valued at around one billion euros. Under this new framework, the consumer brand was re-transcribed as "Sehol" and its operation was licensed out to JAC, while Volkswagen Anhui focused on its own electric vehicles. Sehol then became essentially a rebadged JAC lineup: several models from JAC's Jiayue series were marketed under the Sehol badge. The range expanded with sedans (A5, A5 Plus), compact and mid-size SUVs (X4, X6, X7, X8), a hybrid crossover (QX), and several electric models (E10X, E40X, E50A). Starting in 2023, JAC gradually reintegrated several Sehol models — notably the QX, A5, and X8 — under the JAC brand, and announced its intention to eventually retire the Sehol brand. The brand was never distributed in North America: its presence remains centered on China and a few export markets. Sehol illustrates the strategy of Sino-foreign joint ventures and the rapid consolidation of the Chinese automotive landscape, where brands can appear, merge, or disappear within a few years.

Technologies, innovations and platforms

Sehol relies heavily on JAC's platforms and mechanicals, derived from the Refine and Jiayue series. The internal-combustion range is built mainly around 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engines, paired with manual, continuously variable (CVT), or dual-clutch transmissions depending on the model, in front-wheel drive. The electrified offering is the other pillar: fully electric vehicles (the E10X city car, the E40X SUV, the E50A sedan) with lithium-ion batteries of varying capacity and claimed ranges of up to roughly 500 km on the CLTC cycle, as well as a plug-in hybrid crossover (QX) combining a 1.5-liter turbo engine and an electric motor. The vehicles benefit from modern safety and connectivity features (touchscreen multimedia, driver-assistance systems), drawing on the synergies stemming from the partnership with Volkswagen. The SUVs are built on JAC Refine platforms, powered mainly by 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engines in front-wheel drive, with manual, CVT, or dual-clutch transmissions, offering generous interior space and modern multimedia and safety equipment. The compact sedans are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, paired with a 6-speed manual or a CVT, in front-wheel drive, on a JAC-derived platform with touchscreen multimedia and driver-assistance features. The fully electric models (E10X, E40X, E50A) use lithium-ion batteries offering up to roughly 500 km of CLTC range, while the QX plug-in hybrid crossover combines a 1.5-liter turbo and an electric motor, all on JAC-derived platforms.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses

Positioning

An affordable Chinese brand born from the JAC-Volkswagen partnership, combining gasoline and electrified vehicles, and now in the process of being reabsorbed under JAC.

Reputation

A recent brand with affordable positioning, Sehol has not built up a long-term reliability track record comparable to that of established automakers. Its reputation remains essentially Chinese; it is little known in North America and almost entirely absent from Western press testing. The technical backing of the partnership with Volkswagen supported a perception of honest quality within its segment, but the lack of an international network, the rebadging of JAC models, and the announced gradual withdrawal of the brand starting in 2023 weigh on the clarity of the lineup and, by extension, on the perceived resale value outside China.

Strengths

Accessible pricing, a broad range of body styles (sedans, SUVs of several sizes, electric models, and a plug-in hybrid), and the technical backing that comes from the partnership with Volkswagen and SEAT. Sharing proven JAC platforms ensures controlled costs, a good equipment-to-price ratio, and a varied electrified offering for the Chinese market.

Points to watch

A young brand, with no long-term reliability track record and no distribution or service network in North America. Many of the models are rebadged JACs, and the announced gradual withdrawal of the brand starting in 2023 undermines the longevity of the lineup, parts support, and resale value outside China.

Production and compatibility

Plants, tires and wheels

Production

Sehol production is concentrated in China, in Hefei in Anhui province, the birthplace of JAC Motors and of the joint venture that became Volkswagen Anhui. The vehicles are assembled on JAC's production lines, which share platforms and components with the Refine and Jiayue series. No Sehol plant or production exists in North America, and the brand is not sold there. Its distribution is limited to the Chinese market and a small number of export markets, with no industrial footprint outside China.

Tires and wheels

Because Sehol covers city cars, compact sedans, and SUVs, you'll find fitments common to the Chinese market: 15- to 17-inch wheels on the smaller models and sedans, and 17 to 18 inches, or even larger, on mid-size SUVs such as the X7 and X8. The most common bolt pattern on this type of vehicle is generally 5-lug (often 5x114.3 on sedans and SUVs), but you should always verify the exact dimensions listed on the door jamb or in the owner's manual. In Quebec, winter-rated tires are mandatory from December to March: planning for a second set of winter tires matched to the original dimensions remains essential for these vehicles.
