Sunra
Sunra is a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer founded in 1999. According to the company's official account, the project was born from an idea developed in a garage in Beijing, before the business took shape around the manufacturing of electric two-wheelers. The industrial entity is today tied to Jiangsu Xinri E-Vehicle Co., Ltd., whose headquarters are located in Wuxi, in Jiangsu province. It is important to state from the outset that Sunra is not an automaker in the traditional sense: the brand designs, develops and builds primarily electric scooters, mopeds, electric-assist bicycles and, more recently, electric motorcycles. Sunra presents itself as one of the pioneers of China's electric two-wheeler industry and states that it was among the country's first manufacturers to obtain qualifications to produce electric motorcycles and low-speed vehicles. Over the years, the company has developed several production bases in China (notably Wuxi, Tianjin, Xiangyang and Guangdong) and employs several thousand people. Its announced production capacity runs into the millions of units per year, making it a volume player in the global light electric mobility market. Internationally, Sunra exports to many countries and regions, and its products have obtained various approvals depending on the market (EEC and CE in Europe, DOT and EPA in the United States, for example). The brand made its debut at the EICMA show in Italy in 2023, where it presented higher-performance models, a sign of its intent to move upmarket and establish a stronger foothold in Western markets. In North America, Sunra is present through dedicated distribution channels (notably a Sunra USA structure) offering electric scooters and mopeds. The brand nonetheless remains far less known to the North American general public than the major automakers, its core business remaining urban electric two-wheeled mobility rather than the passenger car.

Technologies
Technologies, innovations and platforms
Sunra's expertise lies in light electric mobility. The models are built around electric motors (often hub motors integrated into the wheel, some with FOC control) and removable lithium batteries, frequently in 48 V, 60 V or 72 V depending on the category, which makes home charging easier. Power outputs range from a few hundred watts for urban mopeds to several thousand watts for fast electric motorcycles. Some models integrate components from recognized suppliers along with energy management systems aimed at maximizing range. In terms of equipment, depending on the version you'll find disc braking, regenerative braking, digital displays and connectivity. Sunra does not develop automotive platforms or ADAS-type driver assistance systems.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses
Positioning
A Chinese manufacturer of affordable electric two-wheelers (scooters, mopeds, motorcycles), and not an automaker.
Reputation
Sunra is seen as a high-volume Chinese manufacturer offering electric two-wheelers with an attractive price-to-equipment ratio. The reliability of its entry-level and mid-range products has improved overall, but the brand remains less established in terms of name recognition and service network than Western or Japanese manufacturers. As with many Chinese manufacturers, actual quality and after-sales service can vary depending on the importer and the market. In the urban electric scooter segment, road tests are generally received fairly well, highlighting good value for money. The resale value of this type of vehicle remains limited and depends heavily on the condition of the battery.
Strengths
Sunra relies on a broad catalog of affordable electric two-wheelers, strong production capacity and removable lithium batteries that are convenient for charging in an urban setting. The brand offers a range spanning from the city moped to the faster electric motorcycle, with multiple approvals allowing it to be sold in many markets, including North America and Europe.
Points to watch
Sunra remains little known to the North American general public and its after-sales service network there is limited. Build quality and parts availability can depend on the importer. The brand does not build automobiles: its lineup is limited to electric two-wheelers. Resale value is modest and depends on the condition of the battery, whose replacement represents a significant cost over the vehicle's lifespan.

Production
Sunra's production is concentrated in China, with several industrial bases announced by the company, notably in Wuxi (Jiangsu province, where the headquarters of Jiangsu Xinri E-Vehicle Co., Ltd. are located), as well as in Tianjin, Xiangyang and Guangdong. These sites assemble scooters, mopeds, electric bicycles and electric motorcycles in high volume. To our knowledge, Sunra does not have a manufacturing plant in North America: its North American presence relies on importation and distribution (for example through a Sunra USA structure) rather than on local production. Vehicles intended for these markets must meet the applicable approvals (DOT, EPA in the United States) according to their category.
Tires and wheels
Important: Sunra builds electric two-wheelers (scooters, mopeds, motorcycles), not automobiles. Its vehicles therefore run on scooter or motorcycle tires, generally in small rim diameters (often around 10, 12 or 14 inches for scooters), and not on car tires and wheels. Questions of bolt pattern and automotive all-season tires do not apply here. In Quebec, an electric scooter or motorcycle is not ridden in winter on snow and ice; these vehicles are stored away during the cold season. Liqui Pneus, which sells automobile tires and wheels, will therefore not have a direct catalog for Sunra.
