Acura CDX
The Acura CDX is a subcompact sport utility vehicle launched in 2016 and intended exclusively for the Chinese market, where Honda's luxury brand sought to strengthen its presence. Unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2016, the CDX responded to growing demand for premium compact SUVs in China's major cities, a segment then experiencing explosive growth. Produced locally by the GAC-Honda joint venture in Guangzhou, the CDX allowed Acura to offer an accessible model well suited to Chinese urban conditions, while complying with local production requirements. Technically, the CDX was based on a platform derived from that of the Honda HR-V and Honda City, sharing many proven components. This foundation ensured recognized reliability while keeping costs under control. The exterior design adopted Acura's styling language of the era, featuring the shield-shaped "Diamond Pentagon" grille and the slim "Jewel Eye" LED headlights, the brand's visual signatures. The compact proportions and sleek silhouette targeted a young, affluent urban clientele. In terms of powertrain, the CDX was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing around 182 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This combination delivered dynamic acceleration and reasonable fuel consumption. All-wheel drive was offered as an option to improve traction in poor weather. In 2018, Acura expanded the lineup with a hybrid variant, the CDX Sport Hybrid, featuring the i-MMD system with two electric motors, which significantly improved energy efficiency and city performance. The CDX cabin emphasized a certain refinement, with carefully selected materials, a touchscreen infotainment system and modern instrumentation. The marketing positioning aimed to appeal to buyers wanting a premium vehicle with a valued image, without the size or price of larger SUVs such as the Acura RDX. The reception of the CDX in China was generally positive, with the model standing out for its pleasant driving, comprehensive equipment and brand image. It helped establish Acura as a credible player in the entry-level luxury segment, even though competition from German brands and local manufacturers remained fierce. Production of the CDX continued until around 2022, a period during which Acura began a strategic realignment of its presence in China. Although it was never marketed in North America or Europe, the CDX leaves the legacy of a well-designed model, suited to its target market, and a testament to Acura's efforts to democratize Japanese automotive luxury among a Chinese clientele seeking modernity, reliability and accessible prestige.
