DR
DR Automobiles is an Italian automaker whose corporate origins trace back to 1985, but whose DR automotive brand truly came into being in 2006 under the leadership of its founder, Massimo Di Risio. A former racing driver who became a dealer (notably for Lancia) and then the official Italian importer of the American brand Saleen, Di Risio established his company in Macchia d'Isernia, in the Molise region of southern Italy. The first model, the DR5, was launched in November 2007. DR's business strategy is unusual: rather than designing its vehicles from A to Z, the company imports cars of Chinese origin, largely purchased as sub-assemblies (CKD assembly, "completely knocked down"), then assembles and completes them at its Italian plant before selling them under its own brands. The most important historical partner is the Chinese manufacturer Chery, but the group has also forged ties with BAIC, Dongfeng, Changan and JAC. Initially marketed without a traditional network, sometimes even in hypermarkets, DR vehicles later relied on a dealer network developed throughout Italy. The group expanded its portfolio with several brands: EVO (launched in 2020), Sportequipe, positioned more upmarket (2022), Tiger (2024) and ICH-X, in addition to Birba for microcars. In 2022, DR even acquired the historic OSCA brand. Driven by an affordably priced offering and above all by its gasoline/LPG bi-fuel powertrains, the group experienced strong commercial growth in the Italian market, reaching record revenue exceeding one billion euros in the mid-2020s. DR remains an essentially Italian and European player: the brand is not distributed in North America, where it is absent from sales networks. For a Quebec buyer, DR therefore remains a little-known brand, with no dealership or official offering in Canada.

Technologies
Technologies, innovations and platforms
DR's technological strength rests less on its own developments than on adapting Chinese platforms (primarily Chery) to European safety and emissions standards. Its signature remains gasoline/LPG bi-fuel, marketed under the in-house name "Thermohybrid," which accounts for the bulk of its sales in Italy by reducing the cost per kilometer. The lineup today covers a broad range of powertrains: gasoline, diesel, LPG bi-fuel, full hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric. The first electric model, the DR 1.0 (a city car derived from a Chery), illustrates this move toward electrification. The vehicles generally use 1.5-litre turbo gasoline engines and safety equipment compliant with European type-approval requirements.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses
Positioning
An Italian brand of low-cost vehicles, derived from Chinese platforms and specializing in gasoline/LPG bi-fuel, absent from North America.
Reputation
DR became known for its favorable price-to-equipment ratio and for the commercial success of its LPG models in Italy, where several rank among the best-selling bi-fuel vehicles. Perception remains nuanced, however: the Chinese origin of the platforms, the status of a "rebadged" brand, and a quality history considered uneven on the early generations foster caution among some buyers, even though recent models are regarded as improved. Data on long-term reliability and resale value is scarce, all the more so since the brand is absent from North America. With no network in Quebec, its reputation there remains essentially theoretical.
Strengths
DR's main strengths are low entry prices, generous equipment for the price, and a very wide range of powertrains, including its recognized specialty of economical gasoline/LPG bi-fuel. The company quickly established itself in its domestic Italian market by meeting demand for affordable, versatile vehicles, covering city cars, SUVs and electrified solutions alike.
Points to watch
The points to watch stem from the Chinese origin of the platforms and the status of a "rebadged" brand, a quality history perceived as uneven on the early generations, and recognition that is still limited outside Italy. Resale value and long-term reliability are poorly documented. Above all, DR's complete absence from North America deprives Quebec buyers of a network, parts and warranty.

Production
DR's industrial heart is located in Macchia d'Isernia, in Molise, Italy. It is there that vehicles imported as sub-assemblies from China, mainly based on Chery platforms, are assembled and completed. The site saw its output increase as sales grew, to the point of being presented in the Italian press as a significant production hub on a national scale. DR has no plant or assembly line in North America and does not export its vehicles there. For a Quebec consumer, this means that no DR model is produced, type-approved or officially distributed in Canada or the United States.
Tires and wheels
Since DR builds mostly city cars and small-to-mid-size SUVs derived from Chery platforms, you'll find wheel diameters typical of these segments, generally in the range of 15 to 18 inches, with the SUVs adopting the largest wheels. The bolt patterns most often correspond to the common standards for vehicles of these sizes. In the absence of an official presence in Quebec, it is best to confirm the exact tire and wheel dimensions on the vehicle's label or the driver's door jamb. In Quebec, certified winter tires are mandatory: for these city-oriented vehicles, a second set mounted on smaller-diameter steel wheels is an economical and practical solution.
