Firefly

Firefly is a young Chinese automotive brand launched in December 2024 by automaker NIO Inc., a company founded in 2014 by William Li and based in Shanghai. Officially unveiled on December 21, 2024 at the NIO Day event, Firefly is the NIO group's entry-level brand, alongside the premium NIO marque and the family-oriented Onvo brand. Its name, which means "firefly," reflects its positioning: small, refined and well-equipped urban electric cars. The brand's leadership was entrusted to Daniel Jin, a former SAIC-GM executive. From its conception, Firefly was designed to compete with small European premium brands such as Mini (BMW) and Smart (Mercedes-Benz), a goal publicly stated by NIO's CEO. The first model, simply named Firefly, was revealed and then launched on April 19, 2025 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Auto Show, with deliveries beginning on April 29, 2025 in China. The brand quickly turned to international markets: the first European deliveries took place in the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium and Denmark, and NIO announced an expansion to around fifteen markets in Europe, Asia and Latin America over 2025-2026, including right-hand-drive production for markets such as the United Kingdom, India, Singapore and Australia. In November 2025, NIO mentioned North America for the first time among its expansion ambitions, without providing a precise timeline. In concrete terms, at the time of writing, Firefly is not sold in Canada or the United States: it is a very recent brand, still absent from the North American market, whose eventual presence is a matter of announced intentions rather than an available offering. This nuance is important for Quebec drivers, who will not encounter these vehicles on local roads in the short term.

Technologies

Technologies, innovations and platforms

Firefly draws on NIO's technological ecosystem. Its model is a small rear-wheel-drive electric car equipped with a rear motor of about 105 kW (141 hp) and 200 N·m, powered by an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery of about 42 kWh, a chemistry reputed to be robust and less prone to degradation. A distinctive feature inherited from NIO: the battery is swappable, paving the way for the "Battery-as-a-Service" (BaaS) program, which lets you lease the battery to lower the purchase price. DC fast charging reaches about 100 kW (10-80% in around thirty minutes) and a three-phase onboard charger of up to 11 kW is offered, with a "vehicle-to-load" function. On the safety and driver-assistance side, the car claims good C-NCAP and Euro NCAP ratings, nine airbags, and a driver-assistance system based on a Horizon Robotics chip.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses

Positioning

A Chinese brand of small premium electric cars from the NIO group, designed to compete with Mini and Smart, and absent from the North American market.

Reputation

As a brand born in 2024 with a single model, Firefly does not yet have a long-term reliability track record or established resale-value data. The first European and Asian reviews are nonetheless favorable: the press highlights high build and material quality for the segment, a surprisingly spacious cabin for a car only 4 meters long, fast charging and excellent value for equipment relative to price. Notably, the model was named "Car of the Year" by the Dutch publication AutoRAI, which praised its value for money. The LFP battery is seen as a guarantee of durability. The main reservation remains the limited track record: a brand too new to judge real-world reliability and value retention.

Strengths

A refined, well-equipped small electric car for the price, with notable build quality, a spacious cabin despite a compact footprint, a durable LFP battery and fast charging. Belonging to the NIO group brings a mature ecosystem, including battery swapping and the BaaS plan that lower the cost of entry. A practical urban design and a generous frunk round out the offering.

Points to watch

A very recent brand: no track record on long-term reliability or resale value. No sales or service network in North America, and no current availability in Canada or Quebec, which makes access to parts and support more difficult. The lineup is limited to a single small electric model, with no combustion or utility variants, and range remains modest for long winter trips.

Production and compatibility

Plants, tires and wheels

Production

Firefly's production is part of NIO's industrial operations in China, with the group based in Shanghai. NIO has also announced the start of right-hand-drive production to support its global expansion. To date, Firefly has no plant or assembly operation in North America, and the brand is not sold there. NIO has mentioned North America among its avenues for future expansion, with no plant, network or confirmed timeline on the continent. For the Canadian and Quebec market, Firefly must therefore be considered a hypothetical imported brand over the medium term rather than a current industrial or commercial presence. Any local production is, for now, a matter of speculation and not an established fact.

Tires and wheels

The Firefly model is an electric city car fitted with 18-inch wheels and original-equipment 215/50 R18 tires, a common size that is easy to find. Like any compact, it favors mid-size wheel diameters (around 17 to 18 inches) and relatively narrow tires that help with range. In Quebec, certified winter tires are mandatory: for a heavy, quiet electric car, you should choose a winter tire suited to the load and to instant torque, sometimes in a smaller fitment (e.g. 17 inches) with a taller sidewall for comfort and snow. In the absence of a local brand presence, always confirm the exact size on the door-jamb label. Precise figures may vary by version.
