Vehicle model
Hyundai Pony
The Pony, launched in 1975, is the first Korean automobile designed in a largely independent manner and the first Korean model exported in large numbers. Its bodywork was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, while its mechanicals came from Mitsubishi. Compact and economical, the Pony targeted buyers seeking an affordable and reliable car. It holds particular significance for the Canadian market: exported to Canada from 1983, it enjoyed resounding success there that far exceeded forecasts, making it one of the most affordable and best-selling cars in the country at the time. The Pony thus laid the foundations for Hyundai's lasting presence in North America. Now a historic collector's model, it inspires the design of modern electric IONIQ models. Its small period wheels are mainly of heritage interest rather than part of the current tire market.
