Ora
Ora is a Chinese automaker dedicated to fully electric vehicles, founded in 2018 by manufacturer Great Wall Motor (GWM). GWM, whose origins trace back to an agricultural-vehicle repair shop established in Baoding, in Hebei province, in 1976, is today one of China's largest automakers. The official creation of the Ora brand was announced in May 2018, with GWM seeking to group its all-electric cars under a distinct banner. According to the manufacturer, the name "Ora" evokes the ideas of "open, reliable and alternative" and pays tribute to Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler, whose surname is pronounced "Oula" in Mandarin. The brand started out with two entry-level models: the small city car R1 (renamed Black Cat) and the iQ crossover. The major turning point came in 2020 with the launch of the Good Cat (also called Funky Cat, and later Ora 03 in export markets), a retro-styled compact designed by former Porsche designer Emanuel Derta, which became the brand's best-selling model. Ora then expanded its lineup with sedans and more upscale variants such as the Lightning Cat (Ora 07) and the Ballet Cat, followed by the Ora 5 SUV. The brand, first present in Asia, entered Europe in 2021 — with a base in Munich — before reaching the United Kingdom in late 2022. With European sales remaining modest, GWM announced in 2024 the closure of its European headquarters, refocusing Ora on China and certain export markets such as Australia. In North America, Ora is not marketed: the brand is offered neither in the United States nor in Canada, and no official network is established there. North American buyers therefore encounter these vehicles only exceptionally, through private import.

Technologies
Technologies, innovations and platforms
Ora is built entirely on platforms designed for electric vehicles, rather than on adapted combustion-engine architectures. The first models used the ME platform, presented as one of the first Chinese architectures dedicated to electric vehicles, while the Good Cat was born from GWM's "Lemon" platform. The batteries combine lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) and NMC chemistries depending on the version, with capacities ranging from about 48 to 63 kWh on the compact and up to more than 80 kWh on the Lightning Cat sedan. Drive is generally front-wheel, with motors in the range of 126 to 170 hp on the Good Cat and up to more than 400 hp on the higher-end versions. On the safety side, the Good Cat/Ora 03 earned five stars from Euro NCAP, with traffic-sign recognition and driver monitoring as standard. Some developments benefit from the GWM-BMW joint venture.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses
Positioning
Chinese all-electric brand from Great Wall Motor, focused on affordable retro-design compacts, absent from North America.
Reputation
Ora is seen as a brand with a distinctive design and an attractive equipment-to-price ratio, especially in markets where it positions itself as one of the most affordable EVs, such as Australia. Reviews praise the interior finish, which is well-executed for the price, and generous warranties (often 7 years on the vehicle and 8 years on the battery depending on the market). On the other hand, long-term reliability data remains limited, the service network is thin outside China, and sales volumes have stayed low in Europe, which weighs on buyer confidence and resale value. With the brand absent from North America, its reputation there is virtually nonexistent.
Strengths
Ora bets on an original and bold style, optimized interior space thanks to platforms born electric, a high level of equipment and safety for the price, and warranties that are often generous. Belonging to the Great Wall Motor group gives it industrial strength, R&D resources and access to the technological joint venture with BMW.
Points to watch
Outside China, Ora suffers from low brand awareness, a sparse service and parts network, and modest sales volumes, which undermines resale value. Long-term reliability data remains limited. In North America, the complete absence of sales deprives buyers of warranty coverage, official servicing and parts supply.

Production
Ora's production is handled in China by Great Wall Motor, whose main industrial bases are located in Baoding (Lianchi district) as well as at other group sites, such as the Xushui plant. GWM also operates assembly facilities abroad, notably in Thailand, where the group was a pioneer among Chinese automakers in producing electric vehicles outside China. In North America, Ora has no factory or assembly operations: the brand is not marketed there and no local production is planned. All Ora vehicles intended for export therefore come from the GWM group's Asian sites.
Tires and wheels
Oras are mainly electric compacts and sedans; they typically come with alloy wheels of 17 to 19 inches, with low-profile tire sizes common in this segment. Because the brand is not distributed in Quebec, the original equipment fitments are not standard on the local market. For an electric vehicle of this size, the greater weight and immediate torque make a good homologated winter tire (3PMSF symbol) particularly important on Quebec roads, where it is legally mandatory during the cold season. Always verify the exact bolt pattern, offset and center bore before any purchase, and favor tires suited to the high load of EVs.
