XPeng
XPeng (officially Guangzhou Xiaopeng Motors Technology, also written XPENG or Xpeng) is a Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturer founded in 2014 in Guangzhou, in Guangdong province. The company was co-founded by Xia Heng (Henry Xia) and He Tao, former technical executives of the GAC automotive group, with financial backing from He Xiaopeng, after whom the brand is named. He Xiaopeng, a digital entrepreneur who co-founded the mobile browser UCWeb (acquired by Alibaba in 2014), became more actively involved in the company and is today its chairman. From the outset, XPeng positioned itself as a smart-mobility brand, betting on assisted driving, over-the-air (OTA) software updates and the idea of a car conceived as a computer on wheels. The first production model, the G3, a compact SUV, entered production in November 2018. The P7 sedan followed in 2020, expanding the lineup into a higher segment. On August 27, 2020, XPeng completed an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), raising approximately US$1.5 billion, and is also listed in Hong Kong. The brand has grown rapidly: it delivered about 429,000 vehicles worldwide in 2025, a sharp year-over-year increase. Its international strategy intensified from 2021 onward, first in Norway and then across much of Europe, as well as in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, with a presence spanning more than sixty countries. In North America, XPeng is not marketed: the brand is offered neither in Canada nor in the United States, where Chinese electric vehicles face significant tariff and regulatory barriers. In Quebec, XPeng therefore remains a brand known essentially through the specialized press rather than through dealerships.

Technologies
Technologies, innovations and platforms
XPeng stands out for its software-driven approach and its advanced electrical architecture. Several recent models are built on the modular SEPA 2.0 platform, featuring an 800-volt high-voltage architecture and silicon carbide (SiC) components that enable very fast charging. The brand develops its assisted-driving systems in-house (XPILOT, then XNGP/NGP), relying depending on the version on cameras, radars, ultrasonic sensors, sometimes lidars, and powerful computing processors. XPeng also emphasizes over-the-air updates, a highly digitalized cabin and, more recently, its own artificial-intelligence chips. The lineup is fully battery-electric, with a foray into range-extender powertrains (EREV).

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses
Positioning
A 100% electric Chinese manufacturer betting on assisted driving, software and fast charging, absent from the North American market.
Reputation
XPeng enjoys a reputation as a technologically ambitious brand, often compared to Tesla for its assisted-driving features and its software-centric cabin. European road tests generally praise the equipment-to-price ratio, the fast charging and the range, while noting that the driving calibration and perceived build quality are still improving. As with many recent Chinese brands, the perspective on long-term reliability and resale value remains limited for lack of a track record. In North America, since XPeng is absent from the market, perception there remains theoretical and rests mainly on media coverage.
Strengths
XPeng distinguishes itself with full electrification, an 800 V architecture that favors fast charging, in-house-developed assisted-driving systems and a highly digitalized cabin. The brand offers an attractive equipment-to-price ratio, competitive range and a sustained pace of software innovation, supported by frequent over-the-air updates and rapid international expansion.
Points to watch
XPeng's absence in North America deprives Canadian buyers of a local network, parts and warranty. The perspective on durable reliability and resale value remains thin for lack of a track record. The perceived build quality and the calibration of some driver aids are still improving, and the reliance on a young software ecosystem may concern cautious buyers.

Production and compatibility
Plants, tires and wheels
Production
XPeng produces mainly in China. Its historic plant is located in Zhaoqing (Guangdong), complemented by a manufacturing site in Guangzhou and another in Wuhan, which supports its ramp-up in output. For Europe, XPeng assembles certain models (G6, G9) in Austria in partnership with the contract manufacturer Magna Steyr, in order to bring production closer to local markets. In North America, XPeng operates no plant and assembles no vehicle there: the brand is not marketed in Canada or the United States. Any North American production would, to date, be a matter of hypothesis rather than a concrete announced project.
Tires and wheels
XPeng vehicles are heavy electric vehicles with large-diameter wheels: depending on the model and trim, you generally find wheels from 19 to 21 inches, with low-profile tires and high load indices suited to the weight of the batteries. The bolt pattern observed on certain models such as the G6 is the 5x112 type, common on EVs of European or Chinese design; verify the exact PCD, center bore and offset by model and year before any purchase. In Quebec, winter tires approved with the mountain-snowflake symbol are mandatory and strongly recommended for these electric vehicles with instant torque; plan for a dedicated winter setup, often in a reduced diameter, to preserve range and traction.
