Mahindra
Mahindra & Mahindra is an Indian automaker headquartered in Mumbai. The company was born on October 2, 1945, in Ludhiana under the name Mahindra & Mohammed, founded by brothers Kailash Chandra Mahindra and Jagdish Chandra Mahindra together with their partner Malik Ghulam Muhammad. It was originally a steel trading firm. After the partition of India in 1947, Ghulam Muhammad left the company for Pakistan, and the corporate name became Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948. The automotive turning point came in 1947, when the firm secured a license to assemble the Willys Jeep in India, the starting point of its long specialization in rugged utility vehicles. Over the decades, Mahindra expanded its activities beyond steel and Jeep assembly, becoming a conglomerate with many branches: tractors (Mahindra is one of the world's largest manufacturers by volume), financial services, information technology and aerospace. On the passenger-vehicle side, Mahindra has established itself as one of India's most important SUV manufacturers, with a lineup built on ladder-frame platforms and diesel powertrains known for their durability. The brand has also grown through acquisitions and alliances, notably the takeover of South Korea's SsangYong (later rebranded) and engineering partnerships in Korea and Italy. In North America, Mahindra established Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA) in 2013, with headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It is there that the Roxor has been assembled since 2018, an off-road 4x4 vehicle sold in the United States and Canada but not street-legal. Mahindra therefore remains best known in the North American market for its tractors and this recreational vehicle, while its road-going SUVs (Bolero, Scorpio, Thar, XUV700) are mainly intended for India and various emerging markets, with no consumer distribution network in Quebec.

Technologies
Technologies, innovations and platforms
Mahindra's technical signature rests on ladder-frame (body-on-frame) architectures and four-wheel-drive systems designed for off-road use and high payloads. Turbocharged diesel powertrains, such as the mHawk family, and more recently the mStallion turbo gasoline engines, power the modern SUVs (Scorpio-N, XUV700, Thar). Mahindra is developing new modular platforms (the flexible NFA architecture for entry-level models, a shared body-on-frame base between the Scorpio-N and Thar Roxx) and is preparing for electrification with the INGLO platform intended for electric versions. On the XUV700, the brand introduced ADAS driver assistance, twin digital displays and advanced driving aids, a sign of its recent move upmarket in technology. Ladder frame (body-on-frame), utilitarian drive and turbocharged mHawk diesel powertrain emphasizing torque, durability and low maintenance cost rather than performance or refinement. Often seven-seat configurations. Body-on-frame platform shared with the Thar Roxx, mHawk diesel and mStallion turbo gasoline powertrains, manual or automatic transmissions and available four-wheel drive, with upgraded equipment on the Scorpio-N. Body-on-frame architecture (compact ladder frame on the three-door, Scorpio-N base on the five-door Roxx), four-wheel drive with off-road capability, turbo diesel and gasoline powertrains, six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Powertrains of 2.0 L turbo gasoline (mStallion, roughly 200 hp) and 2.2 L turbo diesel, manual or automatic transmissions, two- or four-wheel drive depending on the version, ADAS driver assistance and digital instrumentation.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses
Positioning
An Indian manufacturer specialized in rugged, ladder-frame SUVs and utility vehicles, focused on durability, off-road capability and affordability.
Reputation
In India and in emerging markets, Mahindra enjoys a solid reputation for ruggedness and ease of maintenance: models like the Bolero are considered indestructible, easy to repair anywhere and inexpensive to maintain thanks to locally sourced parts. The more recent SUVs (Scorpio-N, XUV700) have been praised by the specialized Indian press for their price-to-equipment ratio and off-road capabilities, with the 2020 Thar winning Car of the Year awards. The brand nevertheless remains little present in North America, where its mainstream recognition is limited to the tractor and the Roxor; no significant resale value exists for its road-going SUVs in Quebec.
Strengths
Proven mechanical ruggedness, durable ladder frames and genuine off-road capability, particularly on the Thar and the Scorpio. Low maintenance costs and great ease of repair, especially on the utility models. Good equipment-to-price ratio on the recent SUVs (XUV700), rapid technological move upmarket, and a strong, diversified industrial presence (tractors, SUVs) that ensures the group's solidity.
Points to watch
An all but nonexistent presence in the North American road-vehicle market: Mahindra SUVs are neither homologated nor distributed in Quebec, which complicates parts, service and resale value. Historically, the utility models prioritize ruggedness over refinement (comfort, finish and sound insulation leave room for improvement). Mainstream brand awareness remains limited outside India, and the after-sales support network for road-going vehicles is absent in North America.

Production
Mahindra's industrial heart is in India, with major plants in Kandivali (Mumbai), Nashik, Chakan (Pune) and Zaheerabad, producing SUVs, utility vehicles and tractors. In North America, Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA), founded in 2013, operates an assembly plant in Auburn Hills, Michigan, the first new automotive plant in southeast Michigan in 25 years. It is there that the Roxor off-road vehicle has been assembled since 2018, distributed in the United States and Canada. Mahindra has evaluated an expanded site in Flint, Michigan, to support its growth. The brand's road-going SUVs, however, are not produced or sold for road use in North America.
Tires and wheels
Mahindra SUVs are vehicles with a rugged chassis that most often run on 16- to 18-inch wheels, with high-sidewall SUV-type tires (e.g., sizes such as 235/65 R17 or 235/60 R18 on the XUV700, 245/65 R17 on the Scorpio-N). For this type of SUV, the typical wheel diameter ranges between 16 and 18 inches. Since these models do not officially circulate in Quebec, the buyer should confirm the exact size stamped on the original sidewall and the bolt pattern specific to the vehicle. For any SUV used in winter in Quebec, a set of certified winter tires is essential and mandatory.
