Aito
AITO is a Chinese automotive brand launched on December 2, 2021 at the Seres Group's Liangjiang plant in Chongqing. The name AITO is an acronym for "Adding Intelligence To Auto." The brand was born from a collaboration between automaker Seres Group, which owns the brand and handles manufacturing, and telecommunications giant Huawei, which leads product definition, technology development, and distribution. AITO is the first brand of the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA) driven by Huawei. The first vehicle, the AITO M5, was unveiled by Huawei on December 23, 2021; it was derived from the Seres SF5. Initially, Seres handled the entire vehicle life cycle (research, manufacturing, after-sales service), while Huawei focused on product definition, development, and sales channels. From 2023 onward, Huawei also became involved in after-sales service and deliveries. The year 2022 saw the arrival of the M7, then the M9 was introduced on December 26, 2023, followed by the M6 and M8. The allocation of rights evolved in line with Chinese regulations, which require that an automotive brand belong to its manufacturer: in July 2024, Huawei transferred the English-language registered trademarks of AITO and the associated patents to Seres Group for approximately 2.5 billion yuan. Sales grew strongly, rising from around 76,000 units in 2022 to more than 386,000 units in 2024, making AITO one of the rising players in the Chinese segment of electrified premium SUVs. The brand first developed in the Chinese domestic market, then began an international expansion, notably into the Middle East (United Arab Emirates). At the time of writing, AITO is not officially sold in North America, where it remains known mainly to industry observers.

Technologies, innovations and platforms
AITO relies on electrification and Huawei's software integration. The vehicles are offered in all-electric (BEV) versions and in range-extender (EREV) versions, where a small combustion engine acts as a generator to recharge the battery without driving the wheels, which reduces range anxiety. The cabin is built around HarmonyOS, with an augmented-reality head-up display and digital instrumentation. The models incorporate Huawei's ADS driver-assistance system, whose ADS 2.0 version combines LiDAR, high-definition cameras, millimeter-wave radars, and ultrasonic sensors with in-house chips. The EREV powertrains pair a 1.5L combustion engine with one or two electric motors offering high combined output and a total range exceeding 1,000 km depending on configuration. SUVs offered in all-electric (BEV) and range-extender (EREV) versions combining a 1.5L combustion engine acting as a generator with electric motors. HarmonyOS cabin, augmented-reality head-up display, and Huawei's ADS driver-assistance system. Electrified platforms shared with the rest of the lineup: BEV and EREV powertrains, HarmonyOS software integration, digital instrumentation and connected functions, ADS driver assistance developed by Huawei with multiple sensors. BEV and EREV drivetrains: a 1.5L combustion engine acting as a generator paired with one or two electric motors for high combined output and an extended total range. LFP or NMC batteries depending on the version, with software management and charging optimized by Huawei. The AITO M5 is built on a dedicated electrified-vehicle platform developed by Seres. The EREV version combines a rear electric motor or two motors (one per axle in AWD) with a 1.5L turbocharged combustion engine serving as a generator, while the pure EV version offers single- or dual-motor configurations. The lithium-ion battery offers a capacity ranging from 40 kWh (EREV) to more than 80 kWh (EV). Huawei's HarmonyOS system drives the infotainment and integrates advanced driver-assistance functions including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, automated parking, and environment recognition through multiple sensors and cameras. The adaptive suspension optimizes comfort and handling. The AITO M5 EV is built on a dedicated electric-vehicle platform developed by Seres, optimized to accommodate high-capacity batteries in the floor. The permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors deliver up to 449 horsepower in a dual-motor configuration with electronic all-wheel drive. The advanced thermal-management system ensures the longevity of the roughly 80 kWh lithium-ion batteries. The high-voltage electrical architecture enables fast charging up to 150 kW. Huawei's HarmonyOS system manages infotainment, cloud connectivity, and Level 2+ driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane centering, automated parking, and advanced obstacle recognition thanks to a complete suite of cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors. The AITO M7 is built on a dedicated electrified-vehicle platform developed by Seres. The extended-range version (EREV) combines a traction electric motor with a gasoline-powered thermal generator, offering a total range of more than 1,000 km. The Pure Electric variant, introduced in 2023, offers a fully electric powertrain with a high-capacity battery. Huawei's HarmonyOS 3 infotainment system forms the technological core of the vehicle, integrating advanced connectivity, intelligent voice control, and over-the-air updates. Driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, parking assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The adaptive suspension optimizes comfort and handling according to conditions. The AITO M9 is built on an extended-range plug-in hybrid architecture (EREV) combining a turbocharged four-cylinder combustion engine acting as a generator with electric motors providing propulsion. The combined output exceeds 500 horsepower with the instant torque characteristic of electric powertrains. The dedicated platform integrates a high-capacity lithium-ion battery enabling more than 200 km of pure electric range. Huawei's HarmonyOS system manages all connected functions, infotainment, and advanced driver-assistance features including semi-autonomous driving. The adaptive air suspension and four-wheel steering improve comfort and maneuverability. The integration of multiple sensors and cameras enables a high level of driver-assistance capabilities.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses
Positioning
AITO is a Chinese brand of electric and range-extender SUVs, combining Seres and Huawei technology in the connected premium segment.
Reputation
AITO quickly built a reputation as a high-end technology brand, carried by Huawei's renown and by the HarmonyOS ecosystem, which is praised for its smooth interface and connected functions. Chinese reviews commend the comfort, equipment, driver assistance, and range of the EREV versions. The strong sales growth reflects a favorable reception in the domestic market. The perspective remains limited, however: the brand is young, its long-term reliability track record has yet to be confirmed, and its resale value is difficult to establish outside China. In North America, the absence of an official presence, network, and parts makes any local assessment cautious.
Strengths
Strong technological integration thanks to Huawei: a polished HarmonyOS interface, advanced driver assistance, and a connected cabin. The range-extender versions offer a long total range that eases charging anxiety. The brand provides a high level of equipment and comfort at competitive prices in the electrified premium SUV segment, and benefits from rapid growth and brand awareness.
Points to watch
A very young brand whose long-term reliability and resale value have yet to be confirmed. The dependence on the HarmonyOS ecosystem and on specific components can complicate servicing outside China. Above all, AITO is not officially distributed in North America: no network, no local warranty, and no parts, which makes purchasing and maintenance difficult in Quebec. The lineup is limited to SUVs.

Plants, tires and wheels
Production
AITO's production is handled by Seres at its facilities in Chongqing, China, notably the Liangjiang plant where the brand was launched, as well as other Seres sites dedicated to the models in the lineup. These plants combine the assembly of electric and range-extender drivetrains. AITO has no plant in North America and carries out no production there: the brand remains focused on the Chinese market, with the beginning of exports to certain international markets such as the Middle East. For a Quebec buyer, this means that no assembly line, dealer network, or official parts center exists locally, which limits the direct availability of the vehicles.
Tires and wheels
The AITO lineup is made up of SUVs, from compact models to large formats, which means large-diameter wheels. Depending on the version, you frequently find 20- and 21-inch wheels, with low-profile tires suited to the size and weight of these electrified vehicles. Since electric and EREV SUVs are heavy, it is important to respect the original load and speed ratings and to monitor tire pressure. In Quebec, approved winter tires are mandatory; for these large SUVs, a winter setup of an appropriate diameter, sometimes slightly narrower, improves traction and comfort. Always confirm the exact size, bolt pattern, and offset based on the vehicle.
