MHERO
MHERO (styled M-Hero, in Chinese Mengshi 猛士, "fierce warrior") is a Chinese automotive brand born in 2022 as a subsidiary of the Dongfeng Motor group (Dongfeng Motor Corporation), one of China's largest state-owned automakers. The brand stems from the Dongfeng Mengshi military lineage, the Chinese equivalent of the American Humvee, in service with the People's Liberation Army since the mid-2000s. MHERO was created to translate this rugged off-road expertise to a civilian clientele, betting entirely on electrification: fully electric vehicles (BEV) and range-extender vehicles (EREV/REEV), a rare positioning in the large luxury off-roader segment. The first production model, the M-Hero 917, was unveiled in August 2022 and then launched commercially in 2023. This full-size SUV, whose angular silhouette directly recalls the Mengshi military utility vehicle, laid the foundations of the brand's identity: extreme off-road capability, high electric power output (more than 1,000 horsepower in some versions) and advanced onboard technologies. The lineup then expanded with the M-Hunter (a recreational off-road machine announced in 2024), followed by the M817, a full-size plug-in hybrid and range-extender SUV launched in 2025, developed in partnership with Huawei for driver assistance and infotainment. MHERO is deploying first on the Chinese market and then targeting exports: the Middle East (with a landmark event in Dubai), certain Southeast Asian markets and Europe all figure in its expansion strategy. To date, the brand has no official commercial or industrial presence in North America; MHERO vehicles are neither distributed nor homologated in Canada or the United States, which makes it a niche automaker in Quebec, known mainly to enthusiasts of high-end electric off-roaders.

Technologies
Technologies, innovations and platforms
MHERO is built on Dongfeng's M TECH platform, designed for intelligent off-roading. It brings together the MORA "skateboard" architecture, the MEGA POWER driveline and the M ATS suite of off-road aids. The flagship models adopt four electric motors (one per wheel), enabling torque vectoring, "crab" movement and even rotation on the spot. The brand uses drive-by-wire controls, domain-based management, VMC dynamic chassis control and AKC active rear-wheel steering. The offering comes in fully electric (BEV) and range-extender (EREV) versions, with a small 1.5 L turbo combustion engine serving solely as a generator. The M817 integrates Huawei technologies (Qiankun ADS system) for driver assistance and a CATL Freevoy off-road battery.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses
Positioning
A Chinese brand (Dongfeng group) of large, fully electrified luxury off-roaders, heir to the Mengshi military vehicle.
Reputation
As a very young brand, MHERO does not yet have a long-term reliability track record or established resale-value data, all the more so since it is absent from North American markets. International specialized press has nonetheless praised the technical ambition of the 917 and the M817: extraordinary power, genuine off-road capabilities and cutting-edge technologies. The perception remains that of a spectacular but expensive, niche product whose everyday durability and service network have yet to be proven outside China. In Quebec, the lack of official distribution limits any concrete perspective on durability and maintenance.
Strengths
Exceptional off-road capabilities inherited from a military base, very powerful electric powertrains, cutting-edge technologies (four motors, rear-wheel steering, crab movement), a Huawei partnership for driver assistance, and a unique positioning as a large, fully electrified luxury off-roader, available as a BEV or as a long-distance range-extender vehicle.
Points to watch
A very recent brand with no reliability track record or established resale value. A complete absence of network, parts and homologation in North America, making it inaccessible in Quebec through official channels. Heavy, bulky and expensive vehicles whose real-world range is sensitive to cold and off-road use. After-sales service outside China is still in its infancy.

Production
MHERO's production is handled in China by the Dongfeng group, whose historic facilities are concentrated around Wuhan, in Hubei province, the automaker's industrial cradle. Manufacturing of MHERO models relies on the industrial ecosystem of Dongfeng and its partners (including CATL for batteries). To date, MHERO has no factory or assembly line in North America, and its vehicles are neither produced nor officially imported there. Any presence of the automaker on the continent would stem from individual imports or gray markets, without a dealer network or established factory support in Canada or the United States.
Tires and wheels
MHERO vehicles are large, heavy full-size off-roaders that put heavy demands on tires and wheels. The 917 comes standard with 20-inch wheels fitted with 275/65R20 tires, roughly a 33-inch-diameter tire, with an off-road profile. On these massive electric SUVs, the load index and casing strength are decisive. The bolt pattern is not publicly confirmed; on a vehicle of this size, 6-lug setups are common. In Quebec, quality winter tires (ideally 3PMSF-rated) in an equivalent size are essential given the high weight and instant electric traction. Be careful: in the absence of local distribution, have the exact dimensions and bolt pattern confirmed by the manufacturer.
