Tank
Tank is a brand of premium off-road sport utility vehicles (SUVs) owned by the Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM), headquartered in Baoding, in China's Hebei province. Great Wall Motor was founded in 1984; in 1990, Wei Jianjun, who still leads the group today as its chairman, took the helm and transformed the company into one of China's leading manufacturers of pickup trucks and SUVs. The group's name is a reference to the Great Wall of China. Tank was not created as an independent company: the lineup first appeared as a model line within GWM's premium Wey brand. Because of a distinctly different styling and positioning focused on serious off-roading, GWM split Tank off into a separate brand in March 2021. The first vehicle, the Tank 300, a mid-size SUV with neo-retro styling, reached the market in 2020 and introduced a dedicated platform named "Tank." The lineup later expanded with larger models such as the Tank 500 (a full-size, seven-seat SUV) and the Tank 700 (a large body-on-frame 4x4), positioned against established benchmarks in the luxury off-road segment. Outside China, the brand is marketed as GWM Tank in several markets. In North America, Tank is present in Mexico, where GWM established its presence in 2023 and then launched the Tank 300 in March 2024, followed by the Tank 500. The brand is not, however, distributed in the United States or Canada, which limits its direct presence in the Quebec market. GWM remains one of the ten largest Chinese automakers, with more than 1.2 million vehicles sold worldwide in 2024, and continues its international expansion, notably into Latin America, the Middle East, and Oceania.

Technologies
Technologies, innovations and platforms
Tank is built on a body-on-frame architecture designed for demanding off-road use, with four-wheel drive, a transfer case with low range (reduction gearing), and differential locks. The lineup combines turbocharged gasoline engines (a 2.0L four-cylinder, a 3.0L twin-turbo V6, and a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 announced for the top of the range) with growing electrification. The in-house Hi4-T plug-in hybrid system pairs a gasoline engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, preserving 4x4 mechanical capability while delivering useful electric range and reduced fuel consumption. The models also feature multi-speed automatic transmissions, off-road driving aids, and modern safety equipment, with several versions earning five stars in ANCAP crash tests.

Identity, reputation, strengths and weaknesses
Positioning
A Chinese brand of premium off-road SUVs from GWM, blending serious 4x4 capability, plug-in electrification, and aggressive pricing.
Reputation
As a young brand, Tank is seen as a capable, well-equipped off-road offering at a price below established premium benchmarks. Press reviews praise its ride comfort, refinement, and apparent ruggedness, while noting certain reservations: occasionally sluggish hybrid-system response under hard acceleration, and a still-short reliability track record due to limited time on the market. Resale value is considered uncertain, as the brand lacks the heritage of names like Land Rover or Toyota. In Quebec, the absence of an official network limits both the brand's perception and access to service.
Strengths
Tank offers genuine off-road capability (a rugged chassis, mechanical 4x4, low range, differential locks), generous equipment, and bold styling, all at a price often below traditional luxury 4x4s. The Hi4-T plug-in electrification adds electric range and fuel economy without sacrificing off-road capability, making it an appealing value proposition.
Points to watch
The main point to watch is the absence of an official network in the United States and Canada, which complicates access, service, and parts. Long-term reliability remains poorly documented, resale value is uncertain due to the lack of brand heritage, and some reviews note that hybrid responsiveness could be improved. The large dimensions and powerful engines also weigh on fuel consumption and tire wear.

Production
Tank's production is part of GWM's industrial network, centered on Baoding, in Hebei, where the group operates several full-process assembly bases, including a major site established in 2003. GWM has also developed production bases abroad: in Eurasia (Russia), in Thailand (the Rayong plant, its first new-energy vehicle plant outside China), and in Brazil (São Paulo State, operational since August 2025). These sites support the brand's international expansion. In North America, there is no GWM plant or local production of Tank; the vehicles sold in Mexico are imported. No manufacturing takes place in the United States or Canada.
Tires and wheels
Tank models are heavy off-road SUVs fitted with rugged AT-type tires. The Tank 300 commonly uses 18-inch wheels with wide tires (around 265 section width), with 17-inch fitments also available. The larger models (500, 700) use 18- to 20-inch wheels depending on the version. For these heavy, off-road-capable SUVs, dedicated winter tires are strongly recommended in Quebec, where they are mandatory; a second set of steel wheels for winter protects the original wheels. Always verify the exact size, load and speed ratings, bolt pattern, and offset before purchasing.
